The Boeing TC-135W is a flying legend that quietly carries the DNA of Cold War innovation into the present day, often hiding in plain sight among the US Air Force’s storied fleet. With its distinct four-engine profile and unmistakable Rivet Joint silhouette, this rare training and test derivative of the C-135/RC-135 reconnaissance family continues to train and test missions long after its contemporaries have retired. At the 2025 Malta International Airshow, I had the rare opportunity to step inside one of only two surviving TC-135Ws, serial 62-4127, gleaming under the Mediterranean sun at Luqa Airport , a living link to…
Textron is dissolving its eAviation business unit and moving its electric and hybrid aircraft programs under the company’s other divisions, marking the end of the short-lived segment that once served as Textron’s public face for next-generation flight technology. The change, disclosed in a filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission on October 17, 2025, will take effect on January 4, 2026, at the start of Textron’s next fiscal year. The move reduces the company’s reporting segments from six to five: Textron Aviation, Bell, Textron Systems, Industrial, and Finance. Much of what had been Textron eAviation — including Pipistrel, the Slovenia-based electric aircraft manufacturer Textron acquired in 2022 — will be folded…
US-based low-cost carrier Southwest Airlines operates an extremely unique network. The budget airline, which had been roughly unchanged operationally since its founding in the second half of the 20th century until recent interventions by activist investment manager Elliott Management, has historically thrived operating services to underserved destinations all across the United States. The airline operates flights from its bases (notably not major connecting hubs), where competition from legacy airlines is limited, and the target customers are everyday travelers. These kinds of passengers are those who typically prefer lower-cost, convenient service to the more expensive offerings of premium-oriented legacy airlines like…
When Russia closed off its airspace to airlines from Western-friendly nations in the wake of the War in Ukraine, it caused a landslide of operational complications for airlines, which shifted industry dynamics. For starters, US and European-oriented carriers were forced to begin serving destinations in Asia via circuitous routes that avoided flying directly over Russia, something which had been the norm for decades. These longer flight routes are more expensive, and they both add additional fuel costs and more flight time to individual routes, both of which make it much more complicated for airlines to compete. However, it would be…

OMAAT readers share a lot of stories with me, and some of them are pretty wild. Well, Michael just shared an experience with me that might just be the most unusual one that I’ve ever heard. I can’t imagine it’s made up, but it’s also so shocking that I struggle to wrap my head around this. Is this the wildest American Airlines phone interaction ever? Let me share the email that Michael sent me, in its entirety: Long time reader who is so flabbergasted by an interaction with AA last night that I thought that I needed to reach out to…
The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is facing criticism from Democrats in Congress for purchasing two Gulfstream G700 jets worth $172 million during the ongoing government shutdown. The DHS, through the US Coast Guard (USCG), signed a sole-source contract with Gulfstream on October 17, 2025. Responding to criticism from Democrats in Congress, the US Coast Guard defended the decision, explaining that the new aircraft will replace “planes that were as much as 20 years old and experiencing several unplanned maintenance issues.” The aircraft are intended for use by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and other top officials. New Jets…
As the military looks to get rid of “forever chemicals” in equipment and clothing, outerwear maker Gore hopes a lightweight jacket that uses a fleece lining, not a chemical coating, to block wind and weather will appeal to Army equipment testers. Gore plans to submit its All-Weather Active Insulation Jacket to the Army’s Soldier Enhancement Program early next year so it can be evaluated for rapid fielding, company staff told Military Times. The jacket aims to replace two items in the Army’s existing Extended Cold Weather Clothing System, or ECWCS: the Level III high-loft fleece jacket and the Level IV…
