Flight tests are a big part of how NASA turns breakthrough ideas into reality. From flying humans faster than the speed of sound to proving designs that helped shape the space shuttle, flight testing transforms bold concepts into safer, more efficient technologies that benefit the public. “Flight tests are a way to safely and effectively prove new technology, which helps certification authorities certify equipment,” said Wayne Ringelberg, chief pilot at NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center in Edwards, California. “It helps industry iterate and make systems better, and it promotes research in areas where new ideas can be developed.” For nearly…
Marriott is getting into the rental apartment business. For the first time, the company will lend its brands to buildings whose customers are tenants, not condo buyers. It’s a departure for a branded residential business long built on selling units. W Apartments Cleveland, scheduled to open in late 2027, will let renters sign as tenants of units at the Erieview Tower that the owner (the Kassouf family) will run through a third-party manager. The long-term rentals are distinct from Marriott’s temporary rentals program, in which roughly 1,500 residence owners in the U.S. and Canada, and more than 2,000 globally, rent…
The Moon appears half-illuminated in this photo captured by the Artemis II crew on flight day 6. The terminator – the difference between light and darkness – provides a stark contrast and even greater perspective of the Moon’s rocky, uneven, and otherworldly surface features. The near side, which is what we can see from Earth, appears in the dark gray regions at the top of this image. Revisit imagery from the Artemis II mission. Image credit: NASA source
AlUla drew 320,000 visitors in 2025, up 15% year-on-year, and is targeting 1 million by 2030 — a goal that requires tripling its current hotel inventory and sustaining international demand through a regional conflict that has already slowed parts of its development pipeline. Phillip Jones, chief tourism officer at the Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU), said the destination currently operates 7 hotels with 1,000 keys and plans to reach close to 3,000 keys by 2030. The Hyatt Place opens in October. An Autograph Collection property is under construction. An Aman Hegra and a Six Senses have been announced. “One of…

The TWZ Newsletter Weekly insights and analysis on the latest developments in military technology, strategy, and foreign policy. One of Russia’s biggest advantages in the war against Ukraine is its ability to launch tactical airstrikes from bases largely out of reach of kinetic responses. While we have frequently reported about Ukrainian attacks on these bases, they aren’t sustained enough to stop Russia from generating devastating sorties. Now Ukraine and NATO are looking to the private sector for ways of changing that equation through what is being called the Airfield Denial Challenge. It offers a 250,000 Euro award to companies or…
The U.S. Army has successfully tested software designed to help vehicle-mounted weapons shoot down drones while both the target and the vehicle are moving, Picatinny Arsenal announced Tuesday. The capability was demonstrated in April at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, using a Common Remotely Operated Weapon Station, or CROWS, equipped with software that has been designed to track and strike small drones while the vehicle is in motion. The effort has been led by the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Armaments Center, according to the release. The project, known as Simultaneous Weapon Autonomy Technology for Fire Control, or SWAT-FC, uses technology…
Brian Chesky has spent more than a decade trying to turn Airbnb into something bigger than a short-term rental platform, but there have been several starts and stops — including the pandemic setback — along the way. He’s trying again — with hotels, experiences, car rentals, airport transfers, and a range of services — but history shows how hard it is to change where consumers book travel. “Why would Airbnb just offer homes? Why couldn’t we offer significantly more things? And that’s the future of this company,” was how Chesky laid out the vision during the 2024 Skift Global Forum. “I anticipate,…
Jason Peterson’s responsibilities for NASA’s Artemis II mission went beyond his usual role as the range operations manager at NASA’s Stennis Space Center near Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. For Peterson, working at NASA is a surreal full-circle moment. “I grew up in DeLisle, Mississippi, right down the road from NASA,” said Peterson. “You would hear NASA testing, the windows would shake, and you knew they were out there. Not in a million years would I have ever dreamed I would work with NASA.” His career journey took a few turns before reaching the space agency. “I got out of school,…
The TWZ Newsletter Weekly insights and analysis on the latest developments in military technology, strategy, and foreign policy. The U.S. military has released new details about the massive Fightertown Recapitalization (FTR) Program at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson (JBER), in Anchorage, southeastern Alaska. This is a huge effort valued at approximately $7 billion that would effectively create an entirely new fighter hub to support future Air Force operations in the strategically important Arctic and Pacific regions. The details emerged in a special notice announcing an upcoming virtual industry day, where government officials plan to brief contractors on the scope of the program…
