I’m primarily a oneworld flyer, given that I live in Miami, and it’s kind of hard not to fly American when living here. I’ve written about how oneworld Emerald is my favorite airline alliance status, but in this post, I’d like to take a look at oneworld Sapphire status, which is the tier immediately below that. While not quite as valuable as oneworld Emerald, it still offers some incredible perks that can enhance your travels on over a dozen airlines. So let’s take a look at oneworld Sapphire status benefits, and how it compares to other alliance tiers. How airline…

UK-based publication “Which?” has called out low-cost airlines for confusing and constantly changing prices for baggage fees, including almost never offering its lowest advertised prices. After sampling luggage prices on over 1,500 flights with easyJet, Ryanair, and Wizz Air, the publication stated that these carriers are charging considerably higher prices than those advertised. All three carriers have stated that their pricing policies when it comes to luggage are transparent. However, this is an issue faced across the wider European continent, with this even being discussed in the European Parliament earlier this summer. A United Airlines Boeing 777-200 suffered an engine failure during takeoff at Washington Dulles on Saturday, sparking a brush fire next to the runway. Thick plumes of smoke billowed from the side of the runway as emergency services put out the fire. During the incident, one of the 777’s engine covers separated from the aircraft after it lost power in an engine. After it entered a holding pattern to jettison fuel, the aircraft landed safely back at Washington Dulles approximately one hour later, with no injuries reported. An OMAAT reader shared an incredibly frustrating experience he recently had, and asked for my take. This is one of those situations where the traveler gets screwed, and actually making things right is extremely complicated. Flight misconnect triggers a mess of an itinerary Jamie was recently traveling from Dublin (DUB) to Auckland (AKL) on a cash business class ticket booked through Singapore Airlines. He was scheduled to fly on Aer Lingus from Dublin to Paris (CDG), then on Singapore Airlines to Singapore (SIN), and then on a Singapore Airlines codeshare on Air New Zealand to Auckland. His first layover was…

For more than 30 years, the Boeing 777 family has been associated with long-haul flights connecting far-flung corners of the world. This remains the case today, with the ‘Triple Seven’ being one of the most popular series of widebody twinjet commercial aircraft out there. However, it recently made headlines after being rostered on a rather shorter route, namely British Airways’ corridor from London Heathrow Airport (LHR) to Madrid (MAD). From March 29 to October 25 next year, BA plans to use the Boeing 777-200ER on a daily rotation between the capital cities of Spain and the UK, departing London Heathrow…

The Boeing 737 has a set of two wheels for its nose landing gear and two sets of two wheels for the main landing gear. This is a common layout for single-aisle planes, shared by the Airbus A320, for example. What isn’t shared with the Airbus, however, is how the gear functions. The main landing gear extends and retracts largely the same, but while the A320 has doors to cover the gear wells, the Boeing does not. This is unusual because almost every other airliner covers its main landing gear doors. Look at the Airbus A320 or Boeing 757 for…
