South Korea has long been held up as a model supporter of the global non-proliferation regime, trusting the American “nuclear umbrella” to keep the peace on the peninsula. But the strategic environment around Seoul has changed dramatically. North Korea now boasts a larger, more sophisticated nuclear and missile arsenal. At the same time, confidence in U.S.-extended deterrence has eroded amid American political polarization and doubts about Washington’s willingness to risk its own cities for an ally. The result is something once unthinkable: a serious national debate over whether South Korea needs its own nuclear weapons. This is no longer a fringe…

Air connectivity between Canada and Europe is on the up, with Simple Flying reporting last week that WestJet had added eight new transatlantic routes to its repertoire for the summer of 2026. Among the most notable additions to its network were Cardiff (CWL), Glasgow (GLA), and Ponta Delgada (PDL). With this aerial corridor presently being such a topic, it is high time to examine the longest non-stop routes between Canada and Europe. According to present scheduling data made available by Cirium, an aviation analytics company, four airlines are operating seven Canada-Europe routes that are 5,000 miles (8,046.7 km) or longer…

For most people, the image of “Air Force One” brings to mind a single blue-and-white jumbo jet, an aircraft that famously banks over Washington, D.C., with the presidential seal gleaming as the jet comes in for a landing at the nearby Andrews Air Force Base. In reality, Air Force One is a radio call sign that can apply to any United States Air Force aircraft that is carrying the sitting president, whether it is a small business jet or a highly modified Boeing 747 that typically transports the commander in chief. Nonetheless, across eight decades of airborne presidential travel, a…
Saudi Arabia is reportedly planning to create a further two new airlines to complement existing carriers Saudia, Riyadh Air, flynas and flyadeal. As part of its Vision 2030 project, the Saudi Arabian government have initiated multiple programs to drive the economy and build a more open and welcoming tourist destination. The aviation industry has played a significant part in Saudi Arabia’s ambition to make the country more prosperous, and less reliant on oil revenues, with the launch of Riyadh Air’s commercial operations later this year among the blue-ribbon events. According to Arabian Gulf Business Insight (AGBI), at Cityscape Global real…
The United States and Ukraine hailed constructive talks in Geneva on Sunday, which yielded an “updated and refined” framework to potentially bring the war with Russia to an end. The two countries said the discussions were “highly productive” and reaffirmed that any future agreement “must fully uphold Ukraine’s sovereignty and deliver a sustainable and just peace,” according to a joint statement released after the meeting. Now nearly four years into the Russian invasion of Ukraine, President Donald Trump continues to put pressure on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to accept his administration’s peace proposal, a 28-point plan, by Thanksgiving. The president…
The Airbus A321XLR will be an important variant in Air Canada’s evolving fleet. The airline has ordered 30 of them, with the first frame expected to be delivered in early 2026. It is, of course, much delayed. It was originally due to arrive in 2024. The Star Alliance member’s XLRs will have 182 seats: 14 fully flat business seats (1-1) and 168 seats in economy (3-3). Iberia’s XLRs have the same capacity, Aer Lingus’ examples have 184 seats, and—while not a fair comparison—all-economy Wizz Air’s frames have 239 seats. Once Air Canada’s Boeing 737 MAX 8s go to Rouge, the…
