The U.S. Army is looking for companies that can manufacture the new XM1208 155mm cluster shell — and a number of them. The goal, according to a market survey published Nov. 20, is to find contractors who can manufacture up to 30,000 XM1208 rounds per year. The U.S. is currently producing 40,000 artillery shells per month, as America and Europe struggle to ramp up production of howitzer munitions in response to the war in Ukraine. The Nov. 20 market survey, meanwhile, noted that the XM1208 can be produced by multiple manufacturers. “Sources shall include their minimum sustaining and maximum capacity…
For most of its production life, the A330ceo stood out as one of the few widebody aircraft that offered true engine choice. Airlines could select between the General Electric CF6-80E1, the Pratt & Whitney PW4000-100, or the Rolls-Royce Trent 700. That flexibility helped grow the A330ceo into a global long-haul workhorse with wide operator appeal. However, shifting market conditions in the early 2010s pushed Airbus to modernize the platform while avoiding the cost of a clean-sheet aircraft. Airbus launched the A330neo in 2014 with a clear goal: deliver modern fuel efficiency at a significantly lower development cost. As the Boeing…
Lufthansa has announced plans to paint six aircraft in a commemorative livery to mark the airline’s 100th anniversary in 2026, dating from the carrier’s founding in 1926. The anniversary design features a white crane on a blue fuselage, with the bird’s wings extending onto the aircraft’s wings. Each plane will display “100” on the left side, “1926/2026” on the right, and an additional “100” on the underside. Fleet selection and timeline The first aircraft to receive the anniversary livery will be a new Boeing 787-9 named “Berlin” (registration D-ABPU), expected to arrive in Frankfurt in December 2025.Five additional aircraft types…
Etihad Airways currently has seven active Airbus A380s. However, two more frames will be operational in 2026, while the tenth aircraft—it has only ever had ten superjumbos—will be used as a spare. Bringing back additional double-deckers means more routes will see the type. On November 24, Etihad announced that it’ll operate the 486-seat aircraft from Abu Dhabi to Tokyo Narita, starting next June. It will replace the Airbus A350-1000, which will be redeployed elsewhere. Given the importance of freight to the Japanese market, the switchover means that far less space for freight will be available. The A380 has significantly lower…
We have all been to the busy terminals of big international airports, or some of us are frequent visitors to smaller General Aviation airfields. And many may have noticed that some airports are living museums, where you can find numerous artifacts and memorabilia that reflect the place’s rich history. They’re where early aviation pioneers tested new ideas, where airmail routes were born, and where communities first glimpsed the future of mobility. Knowing which US airfields have remained active since the earliest days of flight helps us appreciate how aviation shifted from barnstorming and military training to the global transport system…
Ethiopia’s Hayli Gubbi volcano has erupted for the first time in thousands of years, releasing thick ash and smoke into the air and affecting air travel across South Asia, reaching as far as India. The volcano, situated in Ethiopia’s Afar Region, erupted on November 23, 2025, for several hours, launching a huge ash column 10–15 kilometers into the sky and quickly darkening the horizon. Video footage circulating on X shows the eruption at its peak. The event was so significant that it was even visible from space. The volcano has not seen any activity of this magnitude in almost 12,000 years. 🌋 ERUPTION ALERT — Erta…
The inaugural mission of the Boeing Starliner capsule was marred by so many technical issues that it not only had to return unmanned, but its second mission is slated to solely carry cargo with no astronauts aboard. Tests and certification of design improvements are underway, with the earliest expected launch date to be sometime in April 2026. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) awarded contracts to Boeing and SpaceX at the same time in 2014, but allocated a higher funding level to the Boeing project. Since then, it has underperformed in comparison to the SpaceX Dragon capsule. The Starliner’s…
Conferences and events play a crucial role in the ongoing development of the aviation industry. In the wake of the recent government shutdown in the United States, the FAA is looking to boost hiring of air traffic controllers. As reported by Fox News, the FAA has recently approved a new training pathway to make it easier for individuals to become air traffic controllers, with the ultimate goal to hire nearly 9,000 air traffic controllers by 2028, just three years away. The government shutdown from October 1 to November 12 was the longest in the country’s history, and it highlighted the long-existing staffing crisis in the US’s control towers. ATC towers have been understaffed for years,…
A United Airlines flight between Zurich and Chicago was forced to divert to London Heathrow Airport on Sunday, November 23, following reports of cabin fumes being experienced onboard. This resulted in a number of passengers and crew falling ill, forcing the diversion to one of Europe’s busiest airports. The Zurich to Chicago flight, which usually takes around ten hours and 30 minutes gate to gate, was approximately 60 nautical miles (69 miles / 110 km) north of London when the captain decided, out of an abundance of caution, to divert to London, for the safety of all the passengers and…
