Canada’s third-largest airline is doubling down on the country’s capital, Ottawa, with five new sun-soaked routes set to take off this week. Porter Airlines will launch its new winter schedule this week, adding five destinations in Mexico, Costa Rica, the Bahamas, and the Cayman Islands. What makes it even better is that Porter Airlines’ Embraer E195-E2 operating these flights are configured in a four-abreast layout – meaning no middle seat. Porter Airlines has, in recent years, catapulted itself to become the largest airline by number of destinations served at Ottawa Macdonald–Cartier International Airport (YOW), and with these five new services,…
The Airbus A380 is one of the most technically impressive airliners ever made. With two full passenger decks, the largest wings ever attached to a passenger airliner, and an incredibly spacious cabin, it is one of the most recognizable aircraft ever built. It’s also extraordinarily capable, with a range of 8,000 NM (14,800 km), enabling it to be used on ultra-long-haul routes while carrying immense payloads. Naturally, this size and capability require powerful engines. The Airbus A380 is equipped with either the Rolls-Royce Trent 900 or the Engine Alliance GP7200. These engines are incredibly large and powerful, necessary to lift…
Delta Air Lines is the world’s largest user of passenger Boeing 767s. According to ch-aviation, it has 58 frames, not all of which are active. They comprise 37 767-300ERs and 21 767-400ERs. In contrast, United Airlines ranks second globally, with 53 767s. Earlier this month, Delta inaugurated service from Salt Lake City to Lima, becoming the first nonstop scheduled passenger flight from Utah to South America. It is served daily on the 767-300ER. Although only a temporary operation, it has become Delta’s new longest 767 route from Salt Lake City. But with a block time of up to 9h 20m,…
Spirit Airlines pilots have overwhelmingly approved a restructuring agreement that delivers temporary pay concessions and bankruptcy protections the carrier says it needs to secure new financing and continue operating through Chapter 11 before a court-imposed deadline of December 13, 2025. The agreement, ratified by 82% of voting pilots and effective pending court approval, gives Spirit a critical piece of labor stability at a moment when the airline faces intense scrutiny over its future. The Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) said the deal preserves pilots’ core work rules while giving Spirit short-term cost relief tied to its restructuring plan. Pilots will take…
The Defense Department should improve information sharing among different services and offices to improve the V-22 Osprey tiltrotor aircraft’s safety and reduce dangerous or fatal accidents, the Government Accountability Office said Friday. In its report, “Osprey Aircraft: Additional Oversight and Information Sharing Would Improve Safety Efforts,” the GAO said Osprey program stakeholders — including its Joint Program Office and the services that fly it — have not routinely shared information on important areas, including hazard and accident reporting, aircraft knowledge and emergency procedures, and maintenance data on parts and components commonly used across the different types of V-22.As a result, known…
EVIO Inc has officially launched a hybrid-electric regional airliner known as the EVIO 810 that it hopes will represent the future of aerial connectivity in a market that stands to demand thousands of replacement aircraft in the next few decades. With Boeing and Pratt & Whitney among the major stakeholders providing support to the Montreal-based Canadian aerospace company in this endeavor, the orders are already starting to rack up. Indeed, when combining conditional purchase agreements and options, EVIO claims to have already secured a total of 450 orders for its new 810 hybrid-electric regional airliner. The firm expects a relatively…
The fearsome four-letter combination of “SSSS” stands for “Secondary Security Screening Selection.” It is a standard part of the Transportation Security Administration’s random and layered security measures. Based on cross-checks, you can be marked for an additional screening if you are on the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) or No-Fly List. To filter passengers between high-risk and low-risk, the TSA uses your name, date of birth, and gender, which is linked to your itinerary when you book a flight. This is known as the Secure Flight program. In some cases, passengers are randomly selected for enhanced screening, while in other…
Just over a year after the first inert drop of the new Stand-in Attack Weapon, or SiAW, Northrop Grumman announced on Dec. 11 that another separation test had been completed from an F-16 Fighting Falcon. The inert weapon was dropped as part of ongoing testing to validate the SiAW’s flight safety and aerodynamic performance ahead of its entry into operational service. Though the exact date of the test was not announced, the news comes almost exactly one year after the Dec. 3, 2024 announcement about the first ever SiAW separation test on Nov. 7, 2024. No new imagery was released…
High Speed Taxiway A long radius taxiway designed and provided with lighting or marking to define the path of aircraft, traveling at high speed (up to 60 knots), from the runway center to a point on the center of a taxiway. Also referred to as long radius exit or turn-off taxiway. The high speed taxiway is designed to expedite aircraft turning off the runway after landing, thus reducing runway occupancy time.
