By Bjorn Fehrm and Henry Tam. February 27, 2026, ©. Leeham News: Last week, we looked at the development timeline for Part 25 airliner programs to reach Entry Into Service (EIS) after launch, Figure 1. We can see that development times have doubled from the 1960s to the 1980s, compared with development since the year 2000. The main change is the complexity of the aircraft, both in terms of highly optimized structures using new materials and avionics/flight control systems with many software code lines that require extensive verification. We concluded that modern toolchains, with the capability to produce so-called Digital…

A five-year-old Colorado boy’s passion for aviation has led to an unexpected discovery that caught the attention of Southwest Airlines. The boy’s keen attention to detail earned him a VIP tour of the company’s headquarters. William Hines, a pre-kindergarten student, has been fascinated by airplanes and mechanical systems since infancy. His mother, Amber Hines, told CNN that his curiosity about how things work became apparent during “tummy time” (a period when babies spend brief periods lying on their stomach to strengthen neck and back muscles), when he would study wheel movements and disassemble toy cars to understand their mechanisms. William’s…

The US Embassy in Jerusalem is urging non-emergency government personnel and family members to leave Israel while commercial flights are still available. On February 27, 2026, the US Embassy in Jerusalem issued a notice confirming that the Department of State had authorized the evacuation due to safety risks. The advice comes as tensions in the Middle East are on the rise, with potential of a strike on Iran by the US military and concerns that Israel could face retaliatory threats from its neighbor. “In response to security incidents and without advance notice, the U.S. Embassy may further restrict or prohibit…

If you’ve ever looked out the window while waiting at an airport, you may recall seeing numbers on the runways. Each runway is assigned a unique number. While some people assume these numbers are random, there’s actually a methodical system to how they are assigned. Magnetic Heading Runways are numbered by their magnetic heading. Not to be confused with true heading, magnetic heading represents an object’s direction to the Magnetic North Pole. It’s essentially the angle at which the object, such as an airplane, must turn to point to the Magnetic North Pole. Runways are assigned numbers based on their…
The world of inflight entertainment (IFE) is in a state of flux. Over recent years, the advent of streaming content directly to passengers’ devices and increasingly ubiquitous (if generally expensive) inflight internet connectivity has transformed the way people consume content onboard airliners. However, when it comes to the long-haul, the seatback screen continues to reign supreme. And in the field of IFE, one player has remained dominant: Panasonic Avionics. From its base in California, the IFE arm of the giant Japanese conglomerate, ensures that passengers on some 200 airlines, including some of the world’s largest carriers, can enjoy the latest…
