Solar Impulse said the plane had been taken over by Skydweller Aero, an Oklahoma company developing autonomous aircraft, which heavily modified the Solar Impulse 2. The plane was lost during one of these unmanned flights.
Takeoff Hold Lights (THL) The THL system is composed of in-pavement lighting in a double, longitudinal row of lights aligned either side of the runway centerline. The lights are focused toward the arrival end of the runway at the “line up and wait” point, and they extend for 1,500 feet in front of the holding aircraft. Illuminated red lights indicate to an aircraft in position for takeoff or rolling that it is unsafe to takeoff because the runway is occupied or about to be occupied by an aircraft or vehicle.

Engine makers Pratt & Whitney (P&W) and GE Aerospace have completed the Assembly Readiness Reviews (ARR) of their XA103 and XA102 adaptive cycle engines, both companies announced over the last few days. Two US Air Force pilots ejected safely before a T-38 training jet crashed in rural Alabama on May 12, 2026, during a flight from Columbus Air Force Base in Mississippi. The aircraft was involved in what the Air Force described as a “mishap” at about noon local time, according to Columbus AFB.
