Wisk flies first Gen 6 eVTOL, bringing autonomous air taxis closer to launch

Wisk Aero, a fully owned subsidiary of Boeing, has successfully completed the first flight of its Generation 6 aircraft, bringing autonomous passenger air taxis a step closer to commercial reality.

In a statement issued on December 16, 2025, Wisk announced that this achievement marks a significant industry milestone.

The company’s aim is for the Generation 6 aircraft to become the first autonomous passenger aircraft to achieve Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certification for commercial operations in the United States, with planned launch cities such as Houston, Los Angeles, and Miami.

“This first flight is the moment our team has been working toward, and it is a powerful demonstration of the work, expertise, and commitment that have gone into the Gen 6 program,” said Wisk CEO Sebastien Vigneron. “Seeing Gen 6 take flight is an exciting moment for Wisk and the future of aviation.”

Wisk said the aircraft successfully performed its initial vertical takeoff, hover, and stable flight maneuvers at Wisk’s flight test facility in Hollister, CA, located just south of its headquarters in Mountain View.

With the first Gen 6 flight completed, Wisk is now implementing a thorough flight test program aimed at safely validating the Gen 6 design, simulation models, and system performance.

The company indicated that the initial testing phase will concentrate on developing the hover regime, focusing on takeoffs, landings, and low-speed stability before progressing to higher speeds and altitudes, including complex maneuvers like longitudinal transition, lateral transition, and pedal turns.

Wisk is the only company that has designed, built, and flown six generations of eVTOL aircraft, drawing on over 1,750 previous test flights.

The company’s aircraft are all fully electric and autonomous, with specialized human supervision from a ground-based Multi-Vehicle Supervisor, a system Wisk thinks is essential for reaching “high levels of safety, scalability, and affordability”.
