Donald Trump’s grand White House ballroom apparently is no longer just a ballroom.
The US president has shared AI-generated images showing a proposed rooftop drone port on top of the massive White House addition, expanding on earlier comments that the building could include a drone base designed for military defensive purposes.
Trump posted the images on Truth Social. They show military-style drones positioned on a rooftop above the planned ballroom, along with armed personnel and support vehicles. The images appear to be concept art rather than formal architectural plans.
The posts follow a May 19, 2026, press tour of the ballroom construction site, where Trump told reporters the building would include a roof area “set up for unlimited numbers of drones.” He also said the project would include hardened security features, including steel walls and thick glass.
The proposed ballroom has become one of the more unusual and controversial projects of Trump’s second term. Trump described the site as part of a larger bunker-like complex that would include an underground military hospital and research facilities, though the White House did not provide additional details about those elements.
Trump has framed the ballroom and drone port as a national security project, not just an event space. His administration has argued in court filings that recent security incidents near the White House underscore the need for upgraded protective measures.
Imagery of the drone port concept comes as the project faces legal and political challenges. US District Judge Richard Leon previously ruled that the administration lacked authority to proceed with above-ground construction without congressional approval and issued an injunction. An appeals court later paused that injunction, allowing work to continue while the legal fight proceeds.
The Justice Department has asked the court to lift the injunction and dismiss the lawsuit challenging the project. The National Trust for Historic Preservation has opposed the project, citing concerns about changes to the White House complex.
