The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is seeking to make security check in less of a hassle for US air travelers by moving airport screening outside the airport terminal in a new test aimed at easing congestion at Boston Logan International Airport (BOS).
A new remote terminal in Framingham, Massachusetts, will allow some Delta Air Lines and JetBlue Airways passengers to check in, drop bags and clear TSA security before traveling to Logan by bus and skipping security lines at the airport.
The facility, operated by Landline in partnership with Massport, is being described as North America’s first off-airport TSA security checkpoint.
Passengers who use the service will be screened in Framingham under federally approved TSA procedures, then transported directly to the secure side of Logan. Delta passengers will arrive airside at Terminal A Gate A18, while JetBlue passengers will arrive at Terminal C Gate C8.
The concept turns the remote terminal into a second secure front door for Logan, shifting part of the airport process away from terminal curbs, roadways and checkpoint lines. TSA says travelers will be able to park closer to home, clear security and avoid entering the main terminal before boarding.
Landline said the model gives major airports a way to add passenger-processing capacity without expanding the main airport footprint. The company said every passenger who begins the trip in Framingham means one fewer car at Logan and one fewer person in the terminal security line.
The program is being advanced in coordination with TSA, Delta and JetBlue to meet federal security requirements.
“People love traveling — they just hate everything it takes to get there,” said David Sunde, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Landline. “The traffic, the parking, the lines, the chaos — all of those little uncertainties add up to a real headache before you ever reach your seat. We built Landline to fix that.”
Sunde said the Framingham terminal reflects a broader shift in how airports could serve passengers beyond their physical boundaries.
“With the Framingham facility, we’re not just building a bigger front door to Logan — we’re building a new one, closer to where people actually live,” Sunde said.
US airports handled one billion passengers in 2025, with annual throughput expected to reach 1.5 billion by 2040. Proponents of the remote security check-in concept say distributed airport terminals could help large hubs manage growth by moving check-in, baggage handling and security screening closer to the communities they serve.
