The Trump administration is in advanced talks to provide Spirit Airlines with up to $500 million in support, a potential rescue package that would mark a rare federal intervention for a US airline.
Reuters and CNBC reported on April 22, 2026, that the financing under discussion could include government-backed funding and warrants that would give the US government a large equity stake in the bankrupt low-cost carrier.
The talks come as Spirit faces the risk of liquidation after a long stretch of financial pressure that has included rising costs, intense competition, grounded aircraft tied to engine issues, and the collapse of its planned merger with JetBlue.
CNBC reported that Spirit had been facing potentially imminent liquidation, while Reuters said the recent surge in jet fuel prices tied to the US-Israel conflict with Iran had further undermined the airline’s turnaround plan.
President Donald Trump on April 21 suggested the federal government might need to help the airline, citing its roughly 14,000 jobs as a reason the government could intervene.
But the idea of a rescue is already drawing resistance both inside and outside of government.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy told Reuters on April 21 that officials do not want to “put good money after bad,” questioning whether federal support would simply delay a failure of the airline. CNBC also reported that United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby opposes a bailout and argued the broader airline industry is not in a crisis severe enough to justify one.
Spirit has publicly said it is continuing to operate normally and that customers can still book flights and use tickets, credits and loyalty points as usual. The airline has not commented on the government rescuse talks.
