Spirit may face liquidation with fuel price hike the final straw: reports

Spirit Airlines’ hopes of exiting Chapter 11 bankruptcy may have been blunted after reports emerged that the ultra-low-cost carrier is on the verge of liquidation.

According to Bloomberg, sources have told the publication that against the rising costs of fuels cause by the Iran war, Spirit Airlines’ days could be numbered.

On April 15, 2026, Bloomberg reported that a potential liquidation could rear its head as early as this week, although the situation is fluid and there are ongoing discussions with creditors.

In the last big update from Spirit on March 13, 2026, the airline said it expected to emerge from Chapter 11 by early summer.

The intention is to operate a fleet of between 76 and 80 planes by third quarter 2026, primarily consisting of Airbus A320/321ceo aircraft.

However, a lot has changed in a month and with ongoing tensions in the Middle East, fuel prices remain stubbornly high, challenging even the largest airlines.

Spirit has worked to reshape the carrier into a slimmer, leaner model with a focus on its strongest routes and markets.

As part of its March update, the airline said it also planned to increase aircraft utilization on peak days, reduce off-peak flying and maintain flexibility to adjust to seasonal demand across markets.

Spirit announced on August 29, 2025, that it was filing for its second Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection after struggling financially for a prolonged period of time.

In November 2024, the carrier filed for Chapter 11 for the first time but emerged in March 2025 after restructuring parts of its debts.

On March 14, 2026, there was some good news for Spirit after it was named WalletHub’s best airline for a second consecutive year.

WalletHub’s study compared nine of the largest US airlines and two regional carriers across 16 metrics based on 2025 data from the US Department of Transportation.

Spirt was also recognized as the most affordable airline for the third year in a row and crowned the most reliable airline.
