The Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) has become the launch customer of the Airbus A330 Multi-Role Tanker Transport Plus (MRTT+).
The A330 MRTT+, based on the A330neo, will be delivered with both hose-and-drogue and boom refueling systems, a medical evacuation kit, and a VVIP cabin for state transport. Conversion is scheduled to begin in 2026 at Airbus’s Getafe site in Spain, with delivery expected in 2029.
“Thailand’s selection of the A330 MRTT+ underlines the trust placed in this platform, while embracing the next evolution in efficiency, capability and sustainability,” said Jean-Brice Dumont, Head of Air Power at Airbus Defence and Space. “This natural evolution of the A330 MRTT, which will be a key asset for the Royal Thai Air Force operations, builds on its proven performance over the past years in service with nine customers all over the world, accumulating more than 340,000 flight hours.”
Features of the A330 MRTT+
The A330 MRTT+ offers fuel burn up to 8% lower than current MRTTs thanks to aerodynamic refinements, new winglets, and Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines. Its maximum takeoff weight has increased from 233 to 242 tons, providing greater fuel offload and range. Around 95% of its components remain common with existing MRTTs, easing training and maintenance.
At the Paris Air Show 2025, Airbus confirmed that the A330 MRTT+ was already in production for an undisclosed customer, with the first delivery expected in 2028. The new variant will also feature advanced command-and-control functions, enabling it to operate as a node within the Future Combat Air System.
Airbus is exploring ways to increase its current production rate of four to five A330 MRTT+ aircraft per year to meet rising demand. The A330 MRTT family has logged more than 340,000 flight hours with nine operators worldwide and accounts for more than 90% of the non-US tanker market.
RTAF modernization and airpower needs
The Royal Thai Air Force operates a mixed combat fleet, including about 50 F-16A/B Fighting Falcons, upgraded F-5TH Super Tigris jets, and 11 Saab JAS 39 Gripen C/D supported by Saab Erieye AEW&C aircraft. Its transport backbone remains the C-130H Hercules, complemented by CN235s and CASA 212s. For aerial refueling, Thailand relies on a single ageing Airbus A310 MRTT, which significantly limits long-range operations.
The order for the A330 MRTT+ comes as Thailand steps up fighter modernization. In August 2025, the RTAF placed its first order for four Saab Gripen E/F fighters, with deliveries expected to begin by 2026. By pairing its future fighters with a next-generation tanker, the air force is investing not only in front-line aircraft but also in the critical support systems that enable them to operate at greater range and endurance.
