Poland has determined that a Polish missile fired at a Russian drone was responsible for damage to a house during a recent air raid.
An investigation was launched to identify the nature of the projectile that struck a residential property in the village of Wyryki-Wola, located in Włodawa County, Lublin Voivodeship, overnight between September 9 and 10, 2025. The impact damaged the roof of the house and a nearby parked car, but no injuries were reported.
Polish authorities have now indicated that the damage was most likely caused by a missile fired during an interception attempt.
“Everything indicates that it was a missile fired by our plane in defense of Poland, in defense of the homeland, in defense of our citizens,” said Tomasz Siemoniak, Minister Coordinator of Special Services, in an interview with TVN 24. “And the military has declared that it will cover these losses.”
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte confirmed that F-16 fighter jets from the Polish Air Force were involved in Operation Eastern Aurora, an air defense mission aimed at intercepting around 20 Russian drones that had entered Polish airspace amid strikes on Ukraine. The missile used in the operation was likely an AIM-120 AMRAAM air-to-air missile.
Dispute over classified note
The Wyryki incident has triggered a political row in Warsaw over when senior officials were briefed and what information they received.
The National Security Bureau (BBN), which advises President Karol Nawrocki, denied having received a classified report before local media revealed that a Polish missile may have struck the house. BBN head Jacek Siewiera said neither he nor the president had been given a comprehensive account in advance.
That statement was contradicted by Siemoniak, who said a note from the Polish Operational Command had in fact reached the BBN on September 12, 2025, containing all knowledge available at the time. The timeline is especially sensitive since Deputy Foreign Minister Marcin Bosacki addressed the UN Security Council on the same day, blaming Russia for the Wyryki incident.
“All responsibility for the damage to the house in Wyryki falls on the authors of the drone provocation, that is, Russia,” Tusk said on X. “Once the proceedings are completed, the relevant services will inform the public, the government, and the president about all the circumstances of the incident. Hands off Polish soldiers.”
NATO bolsters air defenses
Since the incident, Polish authorities have urged NATO to impose a no-fly zone over Ukraine following a series of Russian drone incursions into alliance airspace.
To reinforce Poland’s eastern border, NATO has launched Operation Eastern Sentry. The mission involves German and UK Typhoon jets, French Rafale fighters, and Danish F-16s.
