Norwegian electric seaplane developer NOEMI Aerospace (formerly known as “Elfly”) is expanding the scope of its aircraft development program to include new use cases.

The startup, which provided an update on the status of its aircraft development program on May 19, 2026, shared some details of this update vision for its future clean-sheet amphibious aircraft.

Starting from its initial passenger transportation concept, NOEMI Aerospace is now also considering a range of other variants, both civilian and military, for its amphibious platform. These include cargo transportation, government and special mission applications, search and rescue (SAR), skydiving, and aerial firefighting. A land-based version for passenger and commuter operations is also under consideration.

The development of some of these applications may involve, as well, a revision of the original approach to the aircraft’s propulsion system. While electric-only remains the core propulsion architecture, the Norwegian firm has stated that is now considering also hybrid-electric or thermal engine options, in order to expand the payload or range of the aircraft, which may be a requirement for some of the aforementioned use cases.

In this regard, NOEMI Aerospace’s strategy mimics that of other players in the advance air mobility space, including well-known names such as Joby Aviation, Archer and REGENT, which have unveiled hybrid-electric platforms in order to compete in the growing defense procurement market.

NOEMI Aerospace reiterated its goal of having its first flight in 2027, while 2030 remains the target date for certification and entry into service.
