Malaysia Airlines takes delivery of 16th Boeing 737-8, two more due this month

Malaysia Airlines has taken delivery of its 16th Boeing 737-8, with the aircraft touching down at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL) on May 18, 2026, as part of the carrier’s ongoing fleet renewal program.

The aircraft was flown home by Captain Tengku Khairul Tengku Ali, Captain Nasruddin Embong, and First Officer Emmanuel Kooi Wei Shean.

The airline has said that it expects to receive two more 737-8s this month, continuing its effort to modernize its narrowbody fleet.

A more efficient aircraft

The 737-8 offers notable improvements over the airline’s outgoing 737 Next Gen fleet. According to Malaysia Airlines, the aircraft burns less fuel and produces 20% fewer CO2 emissions, a reduction the airline equates to the annual carbon absorption of 196,000 trees.

Advanced technology winglets help reduce drag and increase lift, contributing an additional 2% in fuel savings. The aircraft also produces a 50% smaller noise footprint compared to previous models, thereby meeting the latest noise and emissions standards.

Cabin and inflight experience

The new 737-8 cabins feature design elements that reflect the airline’s Malaysian identity. The batik motif, a signature of Malaysia Airlines’ branding, is debossed on seat upholstery and curtains in both Business and Economy Class.

Passengers on the 737-8 have access to MHstudio, the airline’s wireless inflight entertainment system. The platform allows travelers to stream movies, music, podcasts and digital books on personal devices. It also supports inflight shopping and meal ordering, with purchases and snacks delivered directly to passengers in their seats.

A long history with Boeing

Malaysia Airlines’ relationship with Boeing dates back more than five decades. The airline received its first Boeing 737-200 at Subang International Airport (SZB) in 1972. Since then, the carrier’s 737 fleet has evolved through successive variants, including the 737-800, before transitioning to the current 737-8.

The airline noted that the fleet expansion reflects its commitment to operational efficiency, while maintaining its tradition of Malaysian hospitality.
