Lufthansa orders 20 more Airbus and Boeing long-haul aircraft

Lufthansa Group has ordered 20 additional long-haul aircraft from Airbus and Boeing as it continues the largest fleet modernization program in its history.

The order includes 10 Airbus A350-900s and 10 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, the German airline group announced on May 11, 2026. Lufthansa valued the deal at $7.7 billion at list prices.

Deliveries are scheduled between 2032 and 2034. The aircraft will replace older, less efficient long-haul jets across the group, though Lufthansa said it has not yet decided which airlines or hubs will receive the new aircraft.

The Supervisory Board of Deutsche Lufthansa AG approved the order at a meeting on May 11, after the Executive Board had previously decided to move ahead with the purchase.

“By ordering 20 additional long-haul aircraft, we are making a sustainable investment in the future of the Lufthansa Group,” CEO Carsten Spohr said. “It is a clear commitment to a modern fleet, to premium quality, and to further reducing CO2 emissions.”

Spohr said newer aircraft remain the airline group’s surest path for reducing emissions from long-haul flying. He noted the Airbus A350 and Boeing 787 are more fuel-efficient, quieter and lower-emission aircraft than the older types they will replace.

Lufthansa said the additional A350-900s and 787-9s will also help standardize its long-haul fleet, reducing complexity while improving operational flexibility and stability. The airline said the aircraft should lower maintenance and operating costs and create additional efficiencies in crew licensing, training and spare parts management.

The order adds to an already large backlog of new aircraft across Lufthansa Group. Including the new deal, the group now has 232 aircraft on order, including 107 next-generation long-haul aircraft.

Lufthansa Group’s long-haul renewal includes Airbus A350-900s, A350-1000s, Boeing 787-9s, Boeing 777-9s and 777-8 Freighters. The group’s existing fleet still includes older Airbus A330s, A340s, Boeing 747-400s and 747-8s, giving the company a sizable replacement need over the next decade.

Lufthansa and its regional partners operate 31 Airbus A350-900s and 16 Boeing 787-9s. The group also listed 14 Airbus A340-300s, five A340-600s, 27 Boeing 747s and 46 Airbus A330s across the wider fleet, according to company fleet data.
