Low-cost-carrier IndiGo has named the former British Airways boss and current director general of International Air Transport Association (IATA) as its new CEO.

On March 31, 2026, IndiGo announced that following the departure of ex-CEO Pieter Elbers, industry heavyweight Willie Walsh would be taking over the role.

In a letter to the National Stock Exchange of India from Indigo’s parent company InterGlobe Aviation, it said that the airline’s board of directors had approved the appointment Willie Walsh as the new CEO.

Walsh is expected to bring his tenure at IATA to a close on July 31, 2026, and take the reins at IndiGo no later than August 3, 2026.

Walsh was also previously CEO at International Airlines Group (IAG), which owns Aer Lingus, British Airways, Iberia, Level and Vueling. He was also CEO at Aer Lingus.

“I am thrilled that Willie will be at the helm of IndiGo. He is an exceptional global aviation leader with a stellar track record of outstanding leadership across several airlines. His experience in managing large scale airline operations and navigating complex market dynamics make him ideally suited to strengthen and lead IndiGo for continued growth in an ever evolving and competitive international aviation environment,” said Vikram Singh Mehta, IndiGo’s Chairman.

He added: “His appointment will mark a new chapter for IndiGo, as it continues its journey in one of the fastest growing aviation markets in the world.”

Rahul Bhatia, Managing Director of IndiGo, described Walsh as an “iconic and accomplished aviation leader”.

Commenting on his appointment, Walsh said: “I am delighted to have the opportunity to lead IndiGo. The airline has a strong foundation, a compelling vision and an exceptional reputation. What stands out most to me are its people, their passion, professionalism and commitment. The aviation landscape is evolving rapidly, and IndiGo is extremely well-positioned to be at the forefront of this change.”

The appointment of Walsh is subject to receipt of security clearance from the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA).
