GKN delivers first upgraded RM12 engine for Gripen C/D fighter jet

GKN Aerospace has delivered the first upgraded RM12 engine to the Swedish Armed Forces as part of the RM12EP (Enhanced Performance) program for the JAS 39 Gripen C/D fleet.

The delivery forms part of a SEK 400 million ($43 million) effort to improve the performance and long-term supportability of Sweden’s legacy Gripen engines.

The RM12EP program began in 2019 and reached a key stage in October 2023 when Sweden’s Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) awarded the final phase of the RM12 upgrade development contract to GKN, Saab, and GE Aerospace.

Upgrade targets thrust, endurance, and cost

GKN Aerospace is responsible for the development, production, support, and maintenance of both the RM12, an adapted derivative of GE’s F404 used on the Gripen C/D, and the RM16, based on GE’s F414 and used on the Gripen E/F.

According to GKN Aerospace, the RM12EP upgrade includes improved turbine hardware and updated engine control software. The changes are intended to increase thrust, improve endurance, and lower lifecycle costs for the Gripen C/D fleet, which remains a key part of Sweden’s combat aviation inventory even as the newer Gripen E enters service.

“This first upgraded engine delivery represents an important step forward in enhancing the performance and endurance of the Gripen system,” Stefan Oscarsson, Vice President Governmental Solutions at GKN Aerospace, said. “As type certificate holder for the Gripen C/D engine and with a partnership with the Swedish Air Force that spans nearly a century, we are proud to continue supporting Sweden’s operational capability and future readiness.”

Testing underway in Trollhättan

The upgraded engine is being tested at GKN Aerospace’s Trollhättan site in Sweden, with flight tests conducted by Saab and FMV. The project is intended not only to improve performance, but also to reduce support costs and preserve Sweden’s expertise in fighter engine technology. At the same time, support infrastructure for the RM16 engine is also being expanded.
