France pledges more Mirage 2000-5F fighter jets, Aster missiles for Ukraine

France will provide Ukraine with additional Mirage 2000-5F fighter jets and Aster surface to air missiles for the country’s SAMP/T batteries, French president Emmanuel Macron announced on October 24, 2025.

The handout of these weapons systems, which will also be accompanied by the provision of the related training programs for Ukrainian personnel, may take place in the very short term.

This announcement was made after the meeting that the group of countries known as “Coalition of the Willing” held in London to agree on additional measures to help Ukraine withstand continued Russian attacks.

In parallel to this and in an effort to increase pressure on Russia, both the European Union and the US announced an additional round of sanctions targeting Russian companies, organizations and individuals which are deemed to be supporting the war in Ukraine.

At least three Mirage 2000 aircraft are believed to have already been delivered to the Ukrainian armed forces, with the first one of the batch having entered Ukrainian service in February 2025. Although the total number to be delivered has not been confirmed, it is believed the initial batch comprises up to six aircraft of this type.

The possibility of France increasing its deliveries of Mirage 2000 fighters to Ukraine had already been hinted at by former Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba. In August 2025. Kuleba had even suggested France may deliver up to 20 fighter jets, although that point has never been confirmed by French officials.

Before deliveries to Ukraine started, the French Air and Space Force had 26 Mirage 2000-F5 in its inventory. This updated version of the Mirage 2000 fighter jet entered service with the French Air and Space Force at the turn of the century and it is currently being replaced by the Rafale multirole fighter jet.
