Examined: Qatar Airways' Diverse Fleet In 2025

Along with UAE giants Emirates and Etihad Airways, Qatar Airways is one of the ‘big three’ Middle Eastern airlines that are currently setting a high bar as far as long-haul hub-and-spoke connectivity and enhanced passenger experience are concerned. The Qatari flag carrier and oneworld member’s revered status has seen it become a popular choice for those flying from Europe to Asia via the Middle East.

In order to serve its diverse portfolio of routes from its main hub at Doha Hamad International Airport (DOH), Qatar Airways has devised an equally diverse fleet. This collection of commercial aircraft consists of widebody and narrowbody jets from both Airbus and Boeing, which we shall now explore.

According to ch-aviation, Qatar Airways’ fleet consists of 271 aircraft. The biggest of these are its 10 Airbus A380s, as pictured above, and these are 10.3 years old on average, compared to a fleet-wide mean figure of 9.8 years. The carrier once called the A380 its biggest mistake, but paint issues with its Airbus A350 jets and the boom in post-pandemic demand now mean that eight of the 10 are active once again.

As far as the A350 family is concerned, Qatar Airways flies both the A350-900 and A350-1000 variants, with 34 and 25 examples at its disposal respectively. It also has outstanding orders for another 17 units of the stretched A350-1000. At the older end of the scale, these Airbus widebodies are supported by seven A330-200s and 11 A330-300s. Qatar Airways Group CEO Akbar Al Baker said in 2021 that:

“One of Qatar Airways’ greatest assets is our highly flexible fleet of diverse aircraft. This means we are not dependent on a specific aircraft type, and enables us to balance our commercial needs.”

Qatar Airways flies aircraft from two different Boeing widebody series in 2025, with the 777 and 787 being its families of choice. Starting with the 777, the carrier has seven 777-200LRs at its disposal, along with 28 777-200F cargo jets and an impressive 57 units of the larger 777-300ER variant. These popular US-built widebody aircraft models have respective average ages of 15.8, 8.2, and 12.5 years old.

In terms of the 787 Dreamliner family, Qatar Airways currently favors its two smallest variants, with 32 examples of the short-fuselage 787-8 and 24 units of the mid-sized 787-9 currently at its disposal. These aircraft have rather contrasting mean ages, cocking in at 11.2 and 3.8 years old respectively on average. Going forward, the carrier also has outstanding orders for another 61 787-9s and 75 stretched 787-10s.

The Middle Eastern airline also has big plans for the future of its fleet as far as the next-generation Boeing 777X family is concerned. Indeed, current data shows that Qatar Airways has ordered 34 cargo-carrying 777-8F jets and a whopping 90 examples of the stretched 777-9 passenger aircraft. Some of these were added to the carrier’s order book in May 2025 amid the backdrop of Donald Trump’s state visit.

What About Narrowbodies?

On the narrowbody side of things, Qatar Airways has had an infamous on-and-off relationship with the Boeing 737 MAX family in recent years. Data from ch-aviation suggests that seven examples of the MAX 8 are still registered with the carrier, but all of them are inactive. In any case, the series doesn’t appear to have a long-term future at the airline, as it canceled its order for the MAX 10 model in May 2025.

This means that Airbus twinjets dominate Qatar Airways’ single-aisle fleet at present. The carrier currently has 27 units of the A320-200 at its disposal (and has historically flown another 18 examples of the type), with these aircraft clocking in at an average age of 13.3 years old. Data from aeroLOPA shows that they are fitted with 12 business class seats and either 120 or 132 economy seats, depending on the layout.

On the more modern side of things, ch-aviation also lists two inactive A321neos as being part of Qatar Airways’ fleet. These will be fitted with high-density layouts for use on select shorter routes, with three jets eventually earmarked for this role. It also has outstanding orders for 48 standard A321neos.
