Etihad Airways is expanding its presence in China, launching five new routes and adding 28 weekly flights to its schedule.
It’s one of the airline’s boldest single-market expansions in recent years, and it signals just how seriously the UAE is taking its economic relationship with Beijing.
Starting in late 2026 and rolling into early 2027, Etihad will begin flying from Abu Dhabi to five Chinese cities: Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Hangzhou, and Shenzhen. Combined with its existing daily service to Beijing, that brings the airline’s total China operation to 35 weekly flights across six destinations.
Here’s the breakdown of the expansion:
- Shanghai Pudong – Daily flights starting October 1, 2026
- Guangzhou – Daily flights starting March 4, 2027
- Hangzhou – Five weekly flights starting March 4, 2027
- Shenzhen – Five weekly flights starting March 7, 2027
- Chengdu – Four weekly flights starting March 5, 2027

Every route will use Etihad’s Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, which seats 28 passengers in business class and 262 in economy.
The UAE-China corridor is one of the world’s busiest economic arteries, carrying everything from high-tech electronics to luxury goods. Each of these five cities plays a specific role in China’s economy.
Shanghai is the country’s financial center while Guangzhou anchors manufacturing and trade in the south. Shenzhen has become synonymous with technology and exports. Hangzhou is the e-commerce capital, home to Alibaba. And Chengdu represents the fast-growing western region, increasingly important for innovation and tech development.
By connecting all of these hubs to Abu Dhabi, Etihad is positioning itself, and the UAE, as a critical waypoint between China and markets across the Middle East, Africa, Europe, and the Americas.
Mohamed Ali Al Shorafa, Etihad’s chairman, framed the expansion in diplomatic terms, calling it a reflection of the “enduring strength and growing promise” of UAE-China cooperation.
CEO Antonoaldo Neves was more direct about the business case.
“China is a strategically important market for Etihad and a key pillar of our network growth,” Neves said. “This expansion represents a significant increase in capacity and a clear signal of our long-term commitment.”He added that the move supports Abu Dhabi’s broader ambitions to become a global hub for travel and trade.
