EgyptAir has taken delivery of its first Boeing 737 MAX 8, marking the start of a broader fleet modernization program.
Based on flight history, the aircraft, registered SU-GGM, arrived at Cairo International Airport (CAI) on May 2, 2026, following a delivery flight from Seattle via Reykjavik (KEF). The brand-new plane is leased from Dublin-based Japanese leasing company SMBC Aviation Capital and is the first of 18 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft to enter passenger service in Egypt. Deliveries of other aircraft will follow in phases over the coming years as part of the airline’s fleet removal program.
According to the airline’s Chief Executive, Ahmed Adel, the aircraft will play a key role in improving both operational efficiency and passenger experience, as the state-owned flag carrier continues to modernize its narrowbody fleet. EgyptAir plans to deploy the new aircraft on short- and medium-haul routes across Europe and the Middle East, including destinations such as Paris, Brussels, Istanbul, and Vienna. The introduction follows earlier adjustments to EgyptAir narrowbody strategy, including withdrawing Airbus A220 aircraft from its fleet.
Boeing said the delivery builds on a long-standing relationship with EgyptAir, which dates back several decades and includes multiple generations of 737 aircraft. The manufacturer said the introduction of the MAX was a key step in strengthening the airline’s network and operational performance.
EgyptAir currently operates a mixed fleet that also includes widebody aircraft such as Boeing 777s and 787 Dreamliners. The addition of the 737 MAX is expected to enhance flexibility across its short- and medium-haul network, as the airline aligns capacity with demand while improving unit costs.
