Delta adding 34 more Airbus A321neo jets, deliveries to start in 2029

Delta Air Lines has exercised options for 34 additional Airbus A321neo aircraft as it continues a fleet renewal push that the carrier says will lower operating costs and expand premium capacity on domestic and short-haul international routes.

Delta said deliveries from the latest purchase will begin in 2029. The airline said the option exercise will grow its total A321neo fleet to 189 aircraft, making it the largest fleet type in Delta’s history.

“The A321neo has proven to be an exceptional aircraft for Delta, delivering industry-leading efficiency while offering the premium experience our customers value,” Kristen Bojko, Delta’s Vice President of Fleet, said in a statement. Bojko said Delta is investing in a fleet that improves the airline’s cost structure, supports sustainability goals, and provides flexibility for future network needs.

Delta took delivery of its first A321neo in 2022 and has since grown its in-service fleet to 92 aircraft. After the latest option exercise, Delta said it has 97 A321neos on firm order, including the newly converted options, and has options for 36 additional A321neos.

Reuters reported the order marks Delta’s third aircraft announcement of 2026, following a 30-aircraft order for Boeing 787-10s and an additional order for 31 Airbus widebodies earlier this year.

Delta said the A321neo has the lowest operating cost per seat among its narrowbody aircraft and gives the airline added premium seating compared with other single-aisle types in its fleet.

The additional A321neos will use Pratt & Whitney GTF engines. Delta has expanded in-house capabilities around the engine type through Delta TechOps, which supports maintenance work across its fleet and third-party customers.

Delta did not disclose pricing for the aircraft or the delivery schedule beyond the 2029 start date.
