Avelo Airlines scales back fleet and closes several US bases

Ultra-low-cost carrier Avelo Airlines has announced it is scaling back its fleet while also confirming the closure of several hubs in the United States (US).

On January 6, 2026, the four-year-old airline said that the developments were designed to “simplify” its fleet and network amidst a “balance sheet transformation”.

“Avelo Airlines has been recapitalized, and its cash position is now one of the strongest in the U.S. airline industry relative to its size. The airline will use this cash infusion and balance sheet strength to execute its long-term strategy,” said a spokesperson for the US carrier.

Avelo will remove six Boeing 737-700 aircraft from its fleet to focus primarily on its 737-800 jets. According to ch-aviation, the Avelo fleet is currently comprised of eight 737-700s and 14 737-800s.

As part of its plans, Avelo will streamline its network around four current bases. These include New Haven Tweed (HVN), Wilmington New Castle (ILG), Concord Regional Airport (USA) and Lakeland Linder (LAL). In addition, the airline will open a base at McKinney National Airport (TKI) in late 2026.

Avelo will close its bases at Phoenix Mesa Gateway (AZA), Raleigh-Durham (RDU) and Wilmington (ILM).

Avelo will continue serving Raleigh-Durham from New Haven Tweed and Rochester (ROC) and Wilmington from Nashville (BNA), New Haven Tweed, Tampa, (TPA), and Baltimore Washington International (BWI).

“These changes enable Avelo to focus on sustainably scaling five core bases in 2026 and to prepare the company for growth in the coming years, facilitated by the company’s recent order for up to 100 Embraer 195-E2 aircraft,” added the Avelo Airlines spokesperson.
