A Ryanair flight landed at Manchester Airport with just six minutes of fuel in the tank after diverting from Scotland during Storm Amy last week. The Boeing 737-800 had attempted multiple landings at Glasgow Prestwick International Airport , and then at Edinburgh Airport, amid wind speeds of up to 100 miles per hour, before diverting to Manchester. The narrowbody, which can carry up to 189 passengers plus crew, landed with only 220kg of fuel left, having burned through almost all of its reserve fuel. The UK’s Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) has now launched an investigation into the incident. Ryanair…
A couple of days ago, British Airways formally unveiled its brand new global lounge design concept, coinciding with the oneworld carrier’s new lounge opening in Miami (MIA). The airline has done a surprisingly good job with this, and we can expect more lounges to be rolled out with this design over the coming years. While details remain limited, perhaps the most exciting aspect of this is a project that’s expected to start next year. British Airways’ hub lounges undergoing major renovation Back in February 2025, British Airways announced plans to make a big investment in its lounges at London Heathrow…
Hackers tied to a group that identifies as “Scattered Lapsus$ Hunters” have officially published Qantas customer data on the dark web after its ransom deadline expired. This breach, tied to the third-party Salesforce environment originally compromised in mid-2025, exposed the personal details of millions of different customers, including both Australian and non-Australian nationals. This included names, email addresses, phone numbers, dates of birth and even frequent-flyer numbers. Qantas has indicated that there was no payment data released, and that the hackers were not able to gain access to individual passport records. Estimates range from 5-5.7 million affected individuals, all part…
Royal Marines took aim at the engine of a boat suspected of drug smuggling while flying in HMS Lancaster’s Wildcat helicopter over the Gulf of Oman. £35 million of drugs were subsequently seized. Three skiffs were first identified by the Wildcat helicopter’s crew after launching on an early morning patrol from Type 23 frigate HMS Lancaster, which has been deployed to the Middle East with rotating crews since 2022. Lancaster subsequently deployed its other embarked air asset, a Peregrine rotary wing uncrewed aerial system (RWUAS), to continue tracking the skiffs undetected while the Wildcat returned to the ship for a…
While probably of little interest to the average person, here’s something I find to be interesting regarding how airlines choose to brand themselves. Airline, airlines, air lines, and more… Airlines brand themselves in different ways, and I find that distinction to be noteworthy, especially given how often airlines are referred to incorrectly in the media. For example, you have American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and Emirates Airline. There are options beyond that as well, as you have companies like Qatar Airways. I know these distinctions might sound minor, but you’d never guess how much it irks people at some airlines…
As the aviation industry faces mounting pressure to decarbonize, three competing technologies have emerged as potential pathways to a cleaner future: Hydrogen, electric, and sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). Each offers unique advantages and challenges in the race to reduce emissions, cut costs, and maintain operational efficiency across commercial fleets. With air travel projected to double by 2050, finding scalable solutions is no longer an aspirational goal; it’s a necessity for meeting global climate targets and preserving the industry’s long-term viability. While hydrogen and electric propulsion represent bold leaps toward zero-emission flight, SAF provides an immediate, drop-in solution compatible with existing…
The joint U.S., British and Norwegian mission saw the A400M transporting a JLTV, simulating a NMESIS system, and infantry in the High North. The Royal Air Force (RAF) revealed on Oct. 9, 2025 a first-of-its-kind operation conducted in cooperation with the U.S. and Norway in late September. As part of the operation, an RAF A400M Atlas transport aircraft landed for the first time on Norway’s Jan Mayen island in the Norwegian Sea, airlifting there a U.S. Marine Corps JLTV (Joint Light Tactical Vehicle), as well as British, U.S. and Norwegian personnel. Notably, the RAF disclosed the JLTV was meant to…
Pronouncing airline names can be complicated for a variety of reasons. Often this confusion comes down to acronyms vs. initialisms, with the former being abbreviations that are pronounced as words, and the latter being abbreviations that are pronounced as letters. In other situations, the confusion can down to the name originating in a foreign language, and deciding how that should be said in English. With that in mind, I figure it would be fun to cover some of the airline names that people struggle with the most. I wrote a similar post last year, but I want to add a…
In the competitive world of long-haul commercial aviation, aircraft capacity and efficiency can define an airline’s success. Boeing’s widebody lineup has long been a cornerstone of international fleets, offering exceptional performance and reliability worldwide. Among these giants, one model has achieved a reputation for combining exceptional range with impressive passenger capacity. The Boeing 777-300ER stands as one of the most successful long-range jets ever built, a widebody capable of carrying more passengers than its Airbus counterpart while maintaining the versatility and endurance that modern airlines demand. Its story is one of design evolution, operational excellence, and commercial success that continues…
The two British aircraft flew a 12-hour mission along the border with Russia, Belarus and Ukraine. In a rare mission, a Royal Air Force (RAF) RC-135W Rivet Joint electronic surveillance aircraft flew a 12-hour-long mission on Oct. 9, 2025, patrolling the entire border along NATO’s eastern flank and the Black Sea. An RAF P-8A Poseidon (Poseidon MRA1 as per the British designation), also flew a part of the journey along the Russian and Belarusian border before conducting a patrol over the Baltic Sea. The RAF’s statement said that the P-8A flew a “focused route” around the Baltic Sea, while the…
