As a general rule of thumb, airlines don’t hold flights for connecting passengers. Now, it happens sometimes, and it is happening with an increasing frequency, as airlines employ technology that determines the optimal amount of time a flight can be held without impacting operations. That being said, when flights are held, it’s typically for a matter of minutes. That brings us to a situation that an OMAAT reader has shared with me… Southwest Honolulu to San Jose flight held for over an hourOMAAT reader Thomas shared an experience with me, about a Southwest flight he took from Hawaii to the…
In the United States, legacy airlines operate hub-and-spoke networks, funneling passengers through centralized hubs to connect them between any two cities in their network with relative ease. In Europe, most legacy carriers will have a single major hub, through which almost every single one of their flights will pass. Examples of such hub facilities include British Airways’ principal hub at London Heathrow Airport (LHR) and Air France’s primary gateway at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG). Airlines at one time did operate with this kind of single hub network, during an era in which dozens of legacy airlines existed across…
I’m planning on taking my dad on a trip in around a week, though I can’t seem to decide where to take him. I’m considering Japan, Morocco, or…? I’ll let you guys tell me what you’d most enjoy reading about! I’m hoping to take my dad on a weeklong tripI’ve always made it a priority to travel with my parents as much as possible. For the past several years, my priority was traveling with my mom, since she had terminal cancer, so I wanted to make the most of our time together. With my mom having recently passed, it’s now…
Will Embraer develop a competitor to the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737? Embraer is currently exploring the possibility, but it is one that carries huge risks for the company. These are the sort of decisions that make or break companies, or at least companies the size of Embraer. Its market capitalization is currently around $5 billion, and it holds about 3.6% of the global commercial aviation market share. It is unclear what a future Embraer narrowbody airliner would look like, but it would likely be a tube-and-wing design. The possibility of Embraer building a next-generation narrowbody aircraft is very uncertain.…
After a mammoth voyage travelling as far as Australia and Japan, HMS Prince of Wales and its carrier strike group have safely returned home to the UK. Their arrival home after eight months completes the Carrier Strike Group 25 (CSG 25) deployment, which was codenamed Operation Highmast. Across the 223 days since HMS Prince of Wales’ departure from Portsmouth on Apr. 22, 2025, the CSG has worked with over 30 different nations and sailed over 40,000 nautical miles. After a mammoth voyage travelling as far as Australia and Japan, HMS Prince of Wales and its carrier strike group have safely returned…
Boom is the aeronautics company that’s trying to bring back supersonic travel, with its signature Overture product. There’s no denying that there are a lot of smart people working at the company, and that the technology to bring back supersonic travel is there. However, I think the market has evolved, and I don’t think there’s any business case for it, especially with the operating limits of the Overture. Anyway, that’s neither here nor there… The reason for my post is that Boom CEO Blake Scholl is quite a guy, who has a lot of opinions on a lot of things (like abolishing airport…
An ITA Airways Airbus A320neo aircraft operating the first international journey undertaken by Pope Leo XIV was pulled into the manufacturer’s urgent Airbus A320-family precautions over the weekend after a potentially critical computer issue was tied to intense solar radiation. Most jets are complying with this directive through a software rollback and have added further protections. The Vatican City said that the papal aircraft itself required an onboard computer replacement. A technician and a new computer unit were dispatched from Rome to Istanbul in order to finish the repair prior to the Pope’s next flight. This incident demonstrates how a…
With the live AAM test, the Kizilelma is now the first UCAV to launch a radar-guided air-to-air missile. Turkey’s Kizilelma UCAV ha conducted a live-fire test of the Gökdoğan BVR AAM (Beyond Visual Range Air-to-Air Missile), making it the first UCAV to demonstrate that capability, announced drone maker Baykar on Nov. 30, 2025. The test was conducted on Nov. 28. A total of five Turkish Air Force F-16s took part in the test, with the Kizilelma seen taking off with four of them, including two twin-seater F-16Ds with Baykar and Aselsan CEOs on board. One F-16 and an Akinci UCAV…
Here’s a topic that I thought would make for a fun discussion — what are your favorite places that you’ve traveled to? It’s a question that I’m often asked, but struggle to answer. That’s not because I never leave the airport (contrary to what some people may believe), but rather because I have a hard time picking some destinations over others. Let me explain. My challenge with picking “best” travel destinations Before I share some of my favorite places I’ve traveled to, let me talk a bit about why I struggle with the concept of making recommendations in this area,…
The Boeing 737 is the second most-produced aircraft program of all time, behind only the Airbus A320 family. It’s been produced since 1967 in four generations: the 737 Original, the 737 Classic, the 737NG, and the 737 MAX. Several aircraft programs have featured numerous engine options, including the competing A320. The Airbus A320 has been offered with the CFM56-5, the IAE V2500, the Pratt & Whitney PW6000, along with the Pratt & Whitney PW1100G and the CFM LEAP-1A on the A320neo. The Boeing 737 has only ever offered one engine option in each generation. The 737 Original came with the…
