One year after the crash of Air India Flight 171, the cause of the fatal Boeing 787 disaster remains shrouded in uncertainty as investigators continue to examine whether deliberate pilot action, an aircraft technical issue or some other sequence led to the tragedy. Indian investigators are expected to delay the final report into the crash as work continues on engine-related analysis. The Boeing 787-8 crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad on June 12, 2025, killing 241 of the 242 people onboard and 19 people on the ground. The aircraft, registered VT-ANB, was operating a scheduled flight to London Gatwick. Reuters…
By Scott Hamilton June 9, 2026, © Leeham News: The business model and economic realities I was reading about sounded awfully familiar. The Wall Street Journal on June 5 described how car owners are keeping their cars longer because prices have skyrocketed. Fuel savings of the latest technology cars don’t offset the capital cost of buying a new car. “Where’s the financial sense in a new car?” The Journal wrote, quoting a 41-year-old owner of two aging cars. “Better fuel mileage, maybe, but is it going to save me $800 plus per month?” Maintenance costs climb as the cars age.…

Subscription Required By Scott Hamilton and Bjorn Fehrm June 11, 2026, © Leeham News: When Boeing entered crisis mode with the March 13, 2019, grounding of the 737 MAX, the company jumped from one crisis to another. The COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020 dried up demand for widebody airplanes, grinding 787 deliveries to a virtual halt. Then, all deliveries were suspended for 20 months from October 2020, when a production flaw was discovered. Just when things appeared to be looking up at long last, the door plug blew off a 10-week-old 737-9 MAX. The cause was traced to sloppy assembly…

Have you heard of wing loading? It’s an important concept in the field of aviation. Pilots and engineers use it to better understand the limitations of airplanes. As the name suggests, wing loading provides insight into the aerodynamic load limit of an airplane’s wings. For a better understanding of this concept and why it’s important, keep reading. The Basics of Wing Loading Wing loading represents how much weight an airplane’s wings must support during flight. Wings, of course, are the primary lifting surfaces on airplanes. Therefore, they are naturally exposed to aerodynamic stress during flight. Wing loading measures how much…
