The TWZ Newsletter Weekly insights and analysis on the latest developments in military technology, strategy, and foreign policy. Here’s TWZ’s weekly carrier tracker monitoring America’s flattop fleet, including Carrier Strike Groups (CSG) and Amphibious Ready Groups (ARG), using publicly available open-source information. Given the carrier picture is largely unchanged compared to last week, this week’s tracker highlights the big-deck amphibious fleet. Much of America’s fleet of nine amphibious assault ships is hard at work as the U.S. opts to replace the Iwo Jima ARG in Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) with a “sub-optimized” Littoral Combat Force (LCF). The LCF appears to be…
NASA satellites designed to observe cyclone wind speeds and collapsing ice sheets have also proven capable of identifying the approximate locations of GPS jammers. That could help monitor high-risk areas for aircraft and ships navigating the growing prevalence of GPS interference worldwide. Two different NASA satellite systems showed how they could locate a known but mysterious GPS jammer within several kilometers of its position in Iran, according to an experiment by Sean Gorman, CEO and cofounder of the location-based technology company Zephr.xyz that was detailed in the magazine GPS World. Such jammers use strong signals to overpower the weaker radio signals…
An aerial view of launch complex 36 at the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station showing the aftermath of the New Glenn explosion last Thursday. The rocket itself virtually disintegrated in the blast leaving its transporter-erector in wreckage on the concrete pad’s surface. The large gantry suffered structural damage near its base while the mangled remains of a lightning tower are visible to the right of the pad surface. A large processing hangar (at left) came through the blast without major damage, as did propellant tanks and distribution systems. Eight German aerospace and defense companies signed the Team Gen 6 strategic positioning paper at the ILA Berlin air show on June 11, 2026, formally committing to take responsibility for the sixth-generation fighter aircraft at the core of the realigned Future Combat Air System (FCAS). The signatories are Airbus Defence and Space, Autoflug, Diehl Defence, Hensoldt, Liebherr, MBDA Deutschland, MTU Aero Engines, and Rohde & Schwarz. In a statement, Airbus called the signing “an exciting step for European sovereignty” and said that while development of the overarching FCAS ‘system of systems’ is progressing as before, the fighter within it “requires…
One year after the crash of Air India Flight 171, the cause of the fatal Boeing 787 disaster remains shrouded in uncertainty as investigators continue to examine whether deliberate pilot action, an aircraft technical issue or some other sequence led to the tragedy. The Boeing 787-8 crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad on June 12, 2025, killing 241 of the 242 people onboard and 19 people on the ground. The aircraft, registered VT-ANB, was operating a scheduled flight to London Gatwick. Reuters…
