In this post, I thought it would be fun to talk a bit about redeye flights, given their popularity, and how polarizing they can be. What are redeye flights, what are the pros and cons of taking them, and are they worth booking? What are redeye flights? Where is the line drawn? Fundamentally, a redeye flight is one where you fly overnight, and miss a night of sleep in a “real” bed. The term comes from the fact that you may have red eyes from the sleep deprivation you’ll experience due to these flights. After all, as humans we’re programmed…

In the past few years, pilots at most major US airlines have negotiated new contracts. In 2023, we saw American Airlines pilots ratify a new contract, worth nearly $10 billion over four years. As I’ve written about in the past, one interesting aspect of this contract is that pilots will under many circumstances get upgraded to first class ahead of customers on the upgrade list. This has certainly been controversial, and in this post, I’d like to take a close look at how exactly this policy works. I’ve seen a ton of discussion about this online, and I just received…

Folks, the world’s richest man and the airline industry’s richest man are arguing like little children, and they’re both wrong… Elon Musk & Michael O’Leary go after one another A couple of days ago, I covered how European ultra low cost carrier Ryanair announced it had no interest in Starlink. Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary explained that installing Wi-Fi would increase drag on the plane by around 2%, and also (more importantly, if you ask me) that Ryanair passengers weren’t willing to pay for Starlink Wi-Fi. Elon Musk claimed that O’Leary was “misinformed,” and suggested that Ryanair will lose customers if…

It’s not uncommon to hear about violence onboard planes, with poorly behaved passengers typically being the culprits. However, Focus Taiwan reports on a case where the captain of the plane is accused of being the violent one, in what can only be described as a bizarre incident. EVA Air pilots argue over taxiing speed, punches thrown Earlier this month, Taiwan-based Star Alliance carrier EVA Air suspended a captain and opened an investigation into an incident that happened on a recent flight from Los Angeles (LAX) to Taipei (TPE). According to reports, the incident occurred after the flight’s (Malaysian) first officer…

In early 2024, United Airlines had a series of safety incidents that ultimately caused the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to increase oversight of the airline. Among these incidents was a March 2024 runway excursion at Houston Intercontinental Airport (IAH), where a Boeing 737 MAX ran off the runway. Anyway, here’s something that I find fascinating, nearly two years after the incident. A YouTube video has just been uploaded with an analysis of the cockpit voice recorder, and as an aviation geek, I find it to be incredibly interesting. What exactly are pilots talking about in the flight deck after something…

Quite frankly, I’m really confused how this is only happening now, as this seems like the obvious choice… United Airlines focuses on larger Dreamliner variant United Airlines currently has an all-Boeing wide body fleet, including 767s, 777s, and 787s. The 767s and 777s will be retired eventually — 767s will likely leave the fleet before the 777s, which will definitely be around for a decade plus. But when it comes to fleet renewal, the airline is entirely reliant on 787s. United flies all three variants of the 787 Dreamliner, and currently has 80 of them. As it stands, the Star…

Air India and Singapore Airlines have signed a commercial cooperation framework agreement that sets the stage for a deeper partnership between the two Star Alliance carriers, including potential joint business ventures and expanded connectivity between India and Singapore.  The agreement was signed in Mumbai on January 16, 2026, by Air India Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Campbell Wilson and Singapore Airlines Chief Executive Officer Goh Choon Phong. Any expanded cooperation remains subject to regulatory approvals and the signing of definitive agreements.  Under the framework, the airlines plan to explore closer coordination of flight schedules, expanded codesharing, and enhanced product and service…
