The airline industry is highly competitive. As much as possible, the “big three” carriers try to build up fortress hubs, where they dominate market share, and have a lot of pricing power. However, there are some airports that act as hubs for more than one airline, where airlines still find it worthwhile to compete. Perhaps there’s none more interesting than Chicago O’Hare (ORD), which is a hub for both American and United. The competitive dynamics here are fascinating, and I think this might be the most interesting market in the country to watch in 2026. In particular, comments from United…
Swiss satellite maker SWISSto12 announced on January 21, 2026, that it has secured €73 million (US$84.8 million) in financial backing from the European Space Agency (ESA) through the HummingSat Advanced Research in Telecommunications Systems (ARTES) Partnership Project (which has received financial pledges from ESA members Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Sweden and Norway, as well as Associate Member Canada). In the press release announcing this round of funding, the Swiss firm also disclosed that it had raised additional capital from private investors during the second half of 2025, bringing the total fresh investment secured past the €100 million (US$117 million) mark. These…
ZHYTOMYR, Ukraine — “These peace talks feel like cognitive dissonance to me,” “Primo” wrote in a message to Military Times while deployed in southern Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region, home to Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, which has been under Russian occupation since the early weeks of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The 42-year-old air reconnaissance squad commander added that the sense among his troops are that the talks are “pointless” and “irrelevant.” Military Times agreed to refer to all active duty soldiers by their nom de guerre for operational security.Talks that kicked off with a November ultimatum by President Donald Trump…
Delta Air Lines recently placed an order for up to 60 Boeing 787-10s, which will be delivered as of 2031. This is a major development for the airline, given the carrier’s wide body fleet renewal has otherwise been centered around Airbus jets, making this a big win for Boeing. However, rumors now suggest that we could now see another aircraft order from Delta, and one certainly wonders what that could entail. I first wrote about this last week, and the rumors are now becoming a little more specific, so I’d like to take a bit more focused look at how…
The European Parliament has voted against the revision of the regulations on air passenger rights, which included increasing the flight delay threshold to qualify for compensation. On January 21, 2026, MEPs voted 632 to 15 to maintain a passenger’s right to compensation for a three-hour delay and pushed back on several other suggestions they claim would “weaken air passenger rights”. The vote was held after ministers for transport at the European Council published a new framework in June 2025 for changes to passengers’ rights. Last year in its proposal the council said: “The new framework seeks to establish simpler and…

By Chris Sloan, Tom Batchelor and Charlotte Bailey January 22, 2026, © Leeham News: After a strong 2025 marked by rising output, expanding services, and improving execution, GE Aerospace enters 2026 with momentum building across four major programs that define its near- and long-term outlook: the GE9X and the long-delayed Boeing 777X as certification advances toward a 2027 entry into service; the LEAP program as record production levels combine with durability improvements that are beginning to take hold; the widebody GEnx franchise steadily growing its installed base and aftermarket contribution; and the RISE Open Fan as a high-risk, high-reward investment…
China Southern Airlines announced it will resume direct flights between Beijing Daxing International Airport (PKX) and Helsinki Airport (HEL) at the end of March 2026. The move restores a route that was removed five years ago amid pandemic disruptions and subsequent airspace complications. The carrier will begin operating three weekly Boeing 787-9 services from Beijing to Helsinki starting March 29, 2026, with departures scheduled for Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays. By June 20, 2026, the frequency will increase to daily rotations as demand builds through the summer travel season. Flight CZ609 will depart Beijing at 14:20 local time, arriving in Helsinki…
Air India is facing a record 150 billion rupees ($1.6 billion) annual loss after a torrid year marred by a fatal Boeing 787-8 crash and operational troubles. According to Bloomberg, an unnamed source told the publication that Air India had hoped to break even in the year up to March 31, 2026, but plans had been scuppered by a series of events over preceding months. Most significant was the Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crash on June 12, 2025, which killed 229 passengers and 12 crew members. While one passenger survived, around 19 people on the ground were also killed.…
In the race to become the first commercial electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) operator at scale, Archer Aviation closed out Q4 2025 with significant strategic moves. In November, the company announced the acquisition of Hawthorne Airport in Los Angeles for $126 million, securing a strategic hub ahead of the 2028 Summer Olympics. At the same time, Archer, like several of its competitors in the advanced air mobility (AAM) space, took firm steps to strengthen its position in the defense segment. The company built upon the December 2024 launch of its defense division by signing a partnership with Anduril, one…
