A Delta Air Lines (Delta Connection) Canadair CRJ-900LR that had its tail sheared off in a collision at Atlanta Hartsfield–Jackson International Airport (ATL) in September 2024 has returned to service after undergoing a year-long reconstruction to replace its vertical stabilizer. The aircraft concerned, operated by Endeavor Air on behalf of Delta Connection, was facing scrapping after the incident involving it and a Delta Airbus A350-900 jet. However, upon further inspection, the airline decided to repair the aircraft rather than write it off and declare it as scrapped. The incident that saw the CRJ, registered as N302PQ, lose its tail, occurred…

The Royal Air Force (RAF) has officially retired its MQ-9A Reaper remotely piloted aircraft system (RPAS), marking the end of 18 years of operational service that began in 2007.  The MQ-9A Reaper entered RAF service in October 2007, under an urgent operational requirement to support British troops in Afghanistan. Operated by XIII Squadron from RAF Waddington, the aircraft accumulated more than 173,000 flight hours during its career.  Throughout its operational life, Reaper crews conducted persistent overwatch, armed reconnaissance, and precision strikes under Operation Herrick in Afghanistan and Operation Shader in the Middle East.  “Over the last 18 years, the Reaper…

The Boeing 777-300ER is the most successful variant of the world’s most successful widebody aircraft program. With it, airlines finally got an aircraft that could match the iconic Boeing 747 on range and could serve as a large flagship, but without breaking the bank on fuel costs. As such, it quickly became popular with airlines worldwide, and it essentially destroyed the future market for the Boeing 747. Over 800 777-300ERs were sold, while Boeing sold 694 747-400s and 155 747-8s. But while the 777-300ER isn’t as flashy or modern on the inside as a Boeing 787 or Airbus A350, it…

Last month, the Federal Aviation Administration began to ever so slowly ease its strict oversight of Boeing. The first Boeing 777-9 taxis out for its first flight of the program. Credit: Leeham News. Certification of the 777X requires a series of flight tests specific to what’s called Type Inspection Authorization (TIA), issued by the Federal Aviation Administration. Typically, TIA is…

Few airlines are as strange as Air Tahiti Nui, the somewhat obscure flag carrier of French Polynesia. The airline itself operates a relatively small fleet of widebody models, and the carrier’s route network is limited to just a handful of services from Faa’a International Airport (PPT) in Papeete, the capital city of French Polynesia. This type of network highlights an airline with an extremely unique leisure-oriented business model and growth strategy. However, Air Tahiti Nui has not really expanded beyond the core set of routes that it mostly serves. In fact, the carrier has strayed from these core services, and…

Yokes have been around since the early days of aviation. Consisting of a U-shaped control wheel, it allows pilots to adjust an airplane’s roll and pitch. Pilots can tilt the yoke forward, backward and side to side. Yokes allow for direct control over the airplane’s roll and pitch. While many airplanes still have a yoke, however, some now have a side stick, instead. Yokes, for instance, are commonly found in Boeing airplanes, whereas side sticks are typically found in Airbus airplanes. What is a side stick exactly, and how does it differ from a yoke? What Is a Side Stick?…

We recently saw the launch of Atmos Rewards, the new combined loyalty program of Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines. The program is really well thought out, in my opinion, with some unique features you won’t find with many other programs. If you ask me, there was one major weak part to Atmos Rewards when it came to the value of crediting flights to the program, and that’s now going to be addressed. Atmos Rewards’ lackluster partner points earning rates Atmos Rewards has a lot of airline partners, including oneworld as well as non-oneworld partners. As it currently stands, points earning…
