Air Canada cuts flight schedule to ease jet fuel challenges

Air Canada has announced cuts to its flight schedule in response to the increase in the cost of jet fuel caused by the war in Iran and the conflict in the Middle East.

On April 17, 2026, Air Canada said it had identified several routes that were “no longer economically feasible” against the current financial backdrop.

“As we regularly do, we monitor and review our network to ensure that routes are meeting profitability targets. Jet fuel prices have doubled since the start of the Iran conflict, affecting some lower profitability routes and flights which now are no longer economically feasible,” said Air Canada.

Five routes were selected for temporary cessation, including both domestic and international flights.

Within the Canadian borders the Fort McMurray to Vancouver route will be suspended from May 28, 2026, along with the Yellowknife to Toronto route, effective from August 30, 2026.

US flight routes temporarily cancelled include Salt Lake City to Toronto from June 30, 2026, with plans to resume in 2027.

Routes between New York’s John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and both Toronto and Montreal will also be temporary suspended from June 1, 2026, with plans to resume operations on October 25, 2026.

However, Air Canada will still serve New York with normal operations to LaGuardia Airport (LGA) and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) in New Jersey.

Internationally, a planned route between Montreal and the Mexican city of Guadalajara has been placed on hold.

Air Canada said the total impact to the carrier’s planned capacity is approximately 1% of annual Available Seat Miles (ASMs).
