Qatar Airways Slashes 30% Of Flights To This Major US City

Qatar Airways will only serve San Francisco five times a week next summer. That offering will apply for the full season. Its frequency has fallen from the previously planned daily operation. It comes soon after Air India removed two ultra-long-haul routes to the Northern California city.

The oneworld member’s frequency reduction is an intriguing development. It means it has become its only US route with less than a daily frequency and is, therefore, its new least-served city.

Qatar Airways Cuts San Francisco Flights

San Francisco has not been part of Qatar Airways’ network for long. Flights from Doha only began in December 2020, amid the pandemic, which was a highly unusual time to launch the route. Since then, the frequency has nearly always been daily.

Things will be different in 2026. From the end of March, when northern carriers switch to summer schedules based on IATA slot seasons, only a five-weekly service will be available. In contrast, Cirium Diio data shows that a daily flight was available for all preceding summers. That even includes the peak summer of the pandemic-hit 2021.

Flights will now run on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. QR737 will leave Doha at 8:05 am and arrive in San Francisco at 1:35 pm local time (15h 30m). Returning, QR738 will depart at 5:55 pm and return at 7:25 pm local time the next day (15h 30m). This is timed for connectivity, particularly to/from India.

As in previous years, the 327-seat Airbus A350-1000 will continue to be used. This is the lower-capacity but higher-premium configuration of the airline’s two A350-1000 layouts. It has 46 QSuites (1-2-1) and 281 seats in economy (3-3-3; mainly 31″ pitch).

San Francisco Traffic & Loads Had Been Falling

According to the US Department of Transportation, Qatar Airways carried 18,791 round-trip San Francisco passengers in July 2025. Traffic fell by 3% or so compared to the same peak summer month in 2024. In comparison, its overall US passenger volume reduced by 5% in this same period.

San Francisco’s seat load factor also fell: from an exceptionally high 96% to an also very strong 93%. As always, it is about how loads were achieved, and should not be considered in isolation from other factors. In contrast, its overall US load increased marginally to just over 92%.

San Francisco’s performance has seemingly suffered, hence the frequency reduction to address it. The lower capacity may reduce its competitiveness and market share, not least because Emirates serves San Francisco daily and many European operators have at least a daily offering. The lower capacity should help to increase loads and may boost yields, both of which are critical to route performance.

For now, Qatar Airways still plans a daily service to San Francisco in winter 2026/2027. But if the five-weekly operation is extended, it’ll reflect happiness with the results of its summer experiment.

Let’s focus on the peak summer month of July 2026. The aforementioned frequency reduction means that Qatar Airways plans 103 weekly departing flights from Doha to the US (double for both ways). Some 14 to 16 daily departures will be available.

This is its smallest US peak summer offering ever. Although hardly a big drop, Cirium data shows it has fallen from 105 weekly one-way flights in July 2025. More notably, it is down from 118 weekly flights in July 2024, 112 in July 2023, 106 in July 2022, and 107 in July 2021.
