Portuguese carrier TAP has announced its plan for the long-range variant of its narrowbody aircraft, the A321, wherein a portion of the cabin located between Business and Economy classes will facilitate a few seats, which will guarantee passengers more space, comfort, amenities, and a better soft product onboard.
While this allows the carrier to provide a more comfortable travel experience on long-haul services operated with the A321, the airline has stated that a similar onboard product will also be made available on its A330 fleet as well.
A Neighbor Free Promise On The A321LR
The introduction of newer technology and efficient systems has given rise to narrowbody aircraft, which are capable of flying long distances, such as the Airbus A321LR and the A321XLR. While these aircraft are popular among airlines as they are efficient and enable operators to fill the aircraft easily and fly lean routes, not many passengers are keen on the idea of flying long-haul flights on narrowbody aircraft. TAP Air Portugal, however, plans to make this better for their passengers with their latest announcement.
The airline already has a business class cabin onboard its A321LR, which is configured in an alternating 2-2 and 1-1 configuration according to data from aeroLOPA. The economy cabin, however, is configured in a typical 3-3 format, which can be difficult and anxiety-inducing for claustrophobic passengers, flying long durations. TAP’s latest announcement essentially reveals the carrier’s plan to introduce its version of a premium-economy cabin.
Starting Summer 2026, the airline plans on offering 12 seats, right behind the business class cabin, which are described as “neighbour-free”, which will only see four seats per row. The press release states,
“This layout ensures a quieter, more private environment for a truly relaxed journey.”

What Do We Know So Far About This Product?
While the carrier has not announced any specific details, it is a possibility that the airline will block off the middle seat on the three rows behind business class to deliver this experience. The extra space next to passengers can definitely improve the in-flight experience for passengers on long journeys. Furthermore, apart from the neighbor-free seating, booking one of these seats will have other perks.
With the introduction of this product, TAP aims to provide differentiated products with varying degrees of comfort and affordability for its passengers. And once onboard the aircraft, the perks continue as passengers will be served with a “premium main meal” which will have an option of two hot dishes, an amenity kit, premium pillows, and a pair of enhanced headphones. Additionally, for frequent flyers, booking these seats will also get them bonus miles and flexible rebooking and refund conditions.
Not Just The A321LRs, But On Larger Aircraft Too!
As per the airline’s press release, this new product will be offered onboard its long-haul flights operated by the A321LRs, but also its widebody fleet of Airbus A330 aircraft. Considering the A330s have two aisles and offer more cabin space than the A321LRs, it is safe to assume that the product (if the same) would be offered under a different configuration and possibly capacity, as the existing economy on the A330 is configured in a 2-4-2 layout, except at the aft of the aircraft where the layout is 2-3-2.
Though the airline has not confirmed the specifics, the carrier operates two versions of the A330, which include the Airbus A330-200 configured to carry 263 to 269 passengers across two cabins, while the carrier’s Airbus A330-900 is configured to carry 298 passengers across two cabin classes. While adding this product to their fleet will decrease the capacity offered onboard, the airline will be able to charge a premium for these seats, which not only benefits the airlines but the new product will also provide a more comfortable flying experience for the passengers.
It will be interesting to see how the passengers react to experiencing these new products onboard long-haul services. Additionally, it can be expected to potentially see more changes happening with the airline, as the carrier, for a while, has been attracting interest from larger airline groups within Europe. Reports from ch-aviation indicate that in the attempts to privatize TAP Air Portugal, there are three bidders as of late, which are the Lufthansa Group, International Airlines Group (IAG), and Air France-KLM.
