Clean Aviation Joint Undertaking funds further R&D for decarbonization efforts

Sept. 12, 2025, (c) AIN: The European Union’s Clean Aviation Joint Undertaking has awarded €945 million ($1.1 billion) in government funding to 12 projects aimed at decarbonizing commercial air travel, the organization announced this week. Award recipients for this third funding round, which followed a call for proposals in February, include several major aerospace manufacturers who are developing novel aircraft and propulsion concepts.

According to the governing board of the Clean Aviation Joint Undertaking, the selected projects could reduce greenhouse gas emissions for commercial aviation by no less than 30% over the next 10 years. Award teams will begin work under their Clean Aviation contracts in early 2026 and are expected to flight-test their creations in 2028 and 2029.

We Fly on Honeywell’s Boeing 757 and Experience Its New Runway Safety Alert Technology
Sept. 12, 2025, (c) AIN: We join a flight on Honeywell Aerospace’s Boeing 757 test aircraft to get a firsthand look at the company’s new cockpit alerting technology, SURF-A, which is expected to receive FAA certification in 2026. The system can be integrated into any aircraft equipped with Honeywell avionics and helps pilots avoid runway incursions. Smart-X, which is already available, helps pilots avoid runway excursions and wrong surface operations. Honeywell demonstrates how these warning systems work in real time, based on real-life incidents where this technology could have given pilots more time to react.

Boeing Opens Engineering Center in Daytona Beach at Embry‑Riddle Aeronautical University

Sept. 11, 2025, (c) AIN: Boeing has opened a new engineering center in Daytona Beach, Florida, the company announced on September 10. Located in Embry‑Riddle Aeronautical University’s research park, the facility will support Boeing’s defense, space, and security aircraft programs and other advanced technology efforts, the company said.
“This engineering center will accelerate Boeing’s work on critical defense programs and deepen our partnership with Embry‑Riddle, giving us access to an exceptional talent pipeline and enabling collaboration to drive aerospace innovation,” said Dan Gillian, vice president and general manager, Boeing Air Dominance.
Boeing is leasing 65,000 sq ft of space within the Cici and Hyatt Brown Center for Aerospace Technology, a recent expansion to Embry-Riddle’s research park made possible by a $25 million donation from local philanthropists Cici and Hyatt Brown in 2022. The state of Florida subsequently contributed another $20 million.
