Christmas came early for Porter Airlines, but it’s not Santa making a delivery, it’s Embraer instead. The 50th Embraer E195-E2 got underway on its trek from São José dos Campos (SJK) to Toronto Pearson Airport (YYZ).
The aircraft touched down at Bridgetown (BGI) in Barbados just after 9:00 PM, local time, on December 23, according to Flightradar24. It is expected to arrive on the ground in Toronto just in time for Christmas Eve on December 24th.
Porter Airlines On The Way Up
Making the fleet transition from a turboprop to high-capacity regional jets that feel like a single-aisle commercial airliner has fundamentally changed Porter Airlines. The carrier has steadily replaced its de Havilland Dash 8’s with new jets which have not only given the airline a more modern and comfortable aircraft but have also provided the longer range and highly efficient fuel consumption, significantly expanding its portfolio of destinations.
Porter now operates nonstop routes across Canada and the US, including major West Coast markets like Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Las Vegas. For the 2025 winter season, Porter launched 13 new routes to five popular leisure destinations, including Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, Nassau, Grand Cayman, and Liberia (Costa Rica).
In the company’s announcement of the new jet, Michael Deluce, President & CEO of Porter Airlines, said:
“The E2’s introduction into our fleet is allowing us to turbocharge these efforts as the fastest-growing airline in North America over the last three years. The aircraft offers an incredible passenger experience…”
A Whole New World
The addition of the Embraer E195-E2 has been the single most important factor in making Porter Airlines the “obvious candidate” to fill the oneworld alliance’s gap in the Canadian market. The E195-E2’s 3,000-nautical-mile range allows Porter to serve the major hubs of key oneworld members, transforming it from a regional ally into a strategic partner.
The performance, capacity, and comfort on its refreshed fleet put Porter in a position to contribute significantly by funneling domestic Canadian passengers into the long-haul networks of British Airways, Qantas, and Japan Airlines (JAL) at major gateways across Canada and North America. The E2’s “elevated economy” experience with no middle seats, free Wi-Fi, and premium service perks is a perfect match for the oneworld alliance strategy. All of the airlines in the group, like Qatar Airways and Cathay Pacific among others, are known for offering the highest quality flying experience.
oneworld is the smallest of the three major airline alliances, but is widely considered to have the most desirable high-tier membership for flyers. The alliance has adopted a more calculated expansion plan than Star Alliance or Sky Team with a “quality over quantity” focus. The oneworld network is missing a regional member in the Canadian market, and both the alliance and the airline have said that Porter would be the best choice to fill the gap.
The World’s Only Airline Route That Tests The Embraer E-195 E2’s Maximum Range
The Embraer E195-E2 flights on this route have block times of more than six hours.
The E-Jet Difference
The de Havilland Dash 8-400 (Q400) turboprop is still in service with Porter Airlines, but is on its way to being downsized to a very small cadre of airframes. Porter is slated to receive as many as 100 of the Embraer E195-E2. The new “E-Jet” is about 29% more fuel efficient than its predecessor and nearly triple the range of the Dash 8, which was rated for around 1,100 nautical miles.
The E195-E2 is configured with 132 seats, nearly doubling the 78-seat capacity of the Dash 8-400. The plane is also claimed to be the quietest single-aisle jet in the world, with a 65% to 76% smaller noise footprint than previous-generation aircraft. As a jet, the E195-E2 cruises at significantly higher speeds than the turboprop Dash 8, allowing Porter to compete on long-haul routes like Toronto to Los Angeles or Vancouver that were previously impossible.
The E2 offers a wider, more modern cabin with larger overhead bins. The E195-E2 features fast, streaming-quality Wi-Fi and seatback power (AC and USB) at every seat, amenities not traditionally available on Porter’s Dash 8 fleet. The Dash 8 does, however, remain Porter’s primary tool serving Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (YTZ), where commercial jets are currently banned.
