When boarding a flight in the United States, many travelers are surprised to learn that the jet whisking them across the country and abroad might be older than they are. It’s not uncommon for aircraft in the fleets of American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, or United Airlines to have rolled off assembly lines in the early 1990s or even the late 1980s. This raises an important question: Why do US airlines continue to operate aircraft well into their 30s? The answer reveals a fascinating intersection of economics, engineering, and trust. While “old” airplanes might sound unsafe to the average passenger,…

The Pentagon’s F-35 program is facing new delays in the delivery of its Pratt & Whitney engines, a revelation that comes just days after a major new F-35 production contract was finalized with Lockheed Martin.  According to the F-35 Joint Program Office (JPO), contracts for Lots 18 and 19 of the Pratt & Whitney F135 engine will not be finalized until spring 2026, about six months later than planned. US-based travel technology company Uber has its sights set on becoming a leading player in the airline loyalty ecosystem. The carrier has made waves for its large-scale partnerships with major airlines, and Riyadh Air is the latest airline to join this ever-growing list. This will offer exclusive benefits to members of Riyadh’s upcoming loyalty program, which is being rolled out as the young airline prepares to enter the market. Delta’s list of existing partnerships extends far beyond Riyadh Air, as the airline has similar partnerships with Delta Air Lines and Air France. Others have also integrated Uber services into their…

Almost a year has passed since Hainan Airlines began its Beijing Capital-Boston-Brussels-Beijing Capital service. Of course, it is not quite this simple. The flight number changes in Boston, which is not among the world’s ten busiest airports, while no traffic rights exist between Boston and Brussels. Historically, many around-the-world passenger flights operated. They were on carriers that no longer exist (most famously Pan Am) and those that still do. Even United Airlines did it, including on the Boeing 747-400, such as Los Angeles-Hong Kong-Delhi-London Heathrow-Washington Dulles-Los Angeles. Some high-end charter-type services still exist, but they’re extremely rare on a scheduled…

Several airports across the United States are experiencing disruptions as air traffic controllers, who are currently working unpaid, face increased pressure due to the ongoing US government shutdown.  The shutdown has almost reached its seventh day after federal budget talks between Congress and US President Donald Trump broke down over Democrat healthcare funding demands.   The shutdown has put FAA operations under pressure, resulting in over 13,000 air traffic controllers and essential staff working without pay, while the agency’s routine functions such as rulemaking, background checks, and facility upgrades remain on pause.  Widespread airport disruptions  California Governor Gavin Newsom…

Just a few days ago, two Delta Connection Bombardier CRJ900 regional planes collided on the tarmac at New York’s LaGuardia Airport (LGA). The low-speed collision is just the latest incident to punctuate a troubled operational history for the airframe with Delta Air Line’s subsidiary carriers. Flying for Endeavor Air and other regional operators, the CRJ900s in service with Delta have been in the headlines on a number of occasions but for all the wrong reasons. Cabin pressure loss, smoke detector alarms, and wing strikes have plagued Delta’s small jet fleet over the past several months. The aircraft serve a critical…

OMAAT reader James asked if I’ve ever written about my approach to travel insurance. As he asked, “not sure if you ever buy it sporadically or have an annual policy, but you’ve been to some pretty far flung places, and I’m curious how you protect yourself and your family when you travel.” Well, I don’t think I’ve ever addressed this in a post before, but I have a confession to make… and I hope to learn something from the comments section of this post! I don’t typically buy any sort of travel insurance I don’t think I’ve ever deliberately purchased…

According to reports, an 85-year-old Southern California cardiologist, Asoka Jayaweera, died while onboard a Qatar Airways flight from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to Doha Hamad International Airport (DOH). Allegations indicate that he was not provided with a vegetarian meal that he pre-ordered, and flight attendants were not concerned by this matter, reportedly telling him to “eat around” the meat in a regular meal. He then began choking and later died as a result, with family members citing aspiration pneumonia as the ultimate cause. A wrongful death suit has been filed and claims that the captain refused to divert as…
