The University of Sheffield has developed a new way of making sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) using solar energy and believes it could be scaled to industrial levels. On March 30, 2026, the UK-based university said that an international team of engineers has been researching techniques which could reduce the reliance on used cooking oil to produce SAF. The new process captures CO2 from the air, combines it with hydrogen and then heats it using concentrated solar energy to produce the fuel. In a study published in the journal Nature Communications, the researchers used computer modelling and simulation to understand how…
Two EA-37B Compass Call aircraft stopped at RAF Mildenhall for fuel during what may be the type’s first operational deployment abroad, reports suggesting Turkey as their destination. Two U.S. Air Force EA-37B Compass Call electronic warfare aircraft have arrived at RAF Mildenhall, UK, on Mar. 31, 2026. The aircraft departed on Mar. 30 from Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Arizona, and arrived in the UK after a fuel stop at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, New Jersey. Our friend and contributor Glenn Lockett was able to snap some images of the two aircraft upon their arrival at RAF Mildenhall. The EA-37s, flying with…
Embraer’s KC-390 Millennium demonstrator has completed short takeoff and landing operations at Sweden’s Vidsel Test Range as part of the aircraft’s ongoing world demonstration tour, with the manufacturer reporting full mission success under extreme cold weather conditions. The stop at Vidsel, one of Europe’s largest and most remote test and evaluation facilities, included operations on ice-covered surfaces. Located within the Arctic Circle in northern Sweden, the test range regularly experiences the kind of extreme cold the Swedish Air Force would expect to operate in. Embraer said the aircraft completed all planned sorties with 100% mission accomplishment, pointing to the type’s suitability for high-latitude and dispersed basing scenarios. Cold weather validation…
Germany’s interest in acquiring the MQ-28 Ghost Bat has moved from diplomatic signals to a formal industrial partnership in a matter of days, as Rheinmetall announced on March 31, 2026, that it had agreed with Boeing Australia to jointly offer the uncrewed aircraft to the Bundeswehr. The announcement came four days after German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, visiting Australia on March 27, 2026, publicly said the Ghost Bat was “under consideration” for the Luftwaffe. Pistorius, speaking at Australia’s National Press Club, also indicated that Germany’s procurement approach would be flexible and would avoid traditional long-term contracts, citing recent strike UAV purchases in which capabilities were tested…

You’d think that a chauffeur service that promises to “upgrade your travels” and that offers “effortless travel at your fingertips” would do a little better than this. To Blacklane’s credit, I’m impressed by the service recovery, but only after I reached out. Despite outrageous pricing, Blacklane fails at basics Ford and I have been in Europe with our older son Miles for a fun trip, and it’s now coming to an end. While we traveled with a car seat, it somehow disappeared during our second to last hotel stay of the trip. We really don’t know what happened — we…
Air Canada will see a management change, and I don’t think many people will be sad to hear that. Michael Rousseau “retires” as CEO of Air Canada Air Canada has announced that CEO Michael Rousseau has informed the Board of Directors that he will retire by the end of the third quarter of 2026, after nearly two decades at the airline. No immediate replacement has been named. The announcement notes that “work has been underway for more than two years on a comprehensive internal development program for high potential executives.” An external global search was also commenced in January 2026,…
Uber has just announced an interesting acquisition, and I’m curious to see what the long term implications are… Uber expands into the chauffeur service business Uber, the world’s largest rideshare company, is acquiring Blacklane, a global chauffeur service company. Blacklane was founded in Berlin, Germany, in 2011, and connects people with independent local chauffeur services via an app and web booking platform. Much like Uber, Blacklane is a tech company rather than being in the transportation business, as it doesn’t operate its own cars, directly hire drivers, etc. Blacklane currently operates in over 500 cities across more than 60 countries.…
“The fee takes effect May 1. It includes a whopping 10 free landings per aircraft per month. After that, each landing, including touch-and-gos, will cost $20.35 for FFZ-based aircraft and $24.35 for others. Heavier aircraft, reporting a maximum takeoff weight of greater than 6,000 lbs, will pay $3.40 to $4.10 per 1,000 lbs, depending on where they’re based.” Source: The shocking result from recent poor decisions by airport decision makers, instituting aggressive landing fees, that are sure to destroy much of the GA industry in and about the Phoenix aviation community.
I don’t mean to be a skeptic, but the evidence presented doesn’t really seem to justify the narrative… though I’d love to be proven wrong, and I welcome other takes. A strange story of Air Côte d’Ivoire aircraft sabotage Air Côte d’Ivoire is the national airline of the Ivory Coast. The airline recently took delivery of two Airbus A330-900neos, which fascinate me to no end, given that they feature first class. Currently, the airline flies these planes primarily between Abidjan (ABJ) and Paris (CDG). Unsurprisingly, the financial performance of these routes has left a lot to be desired up until…
