But the downside is that pilot skills are subject to deterioration. Hands-on experience and skills become necessary in an instant when emergencies begin to pile up. US Airways flight 1549, the so-called Miracle in the Hudson, is one example where advanced design in flight envelope protection in the Airbus A320, combined with the flying skills of the pilots, led to a successful water ditching alongside New York City.…

Qatar Airways and close partner American Airlines collectively plan 124 weekly flights to the US and Canada next summer. Up to 18 daily flights will be available. Although higher than in 2025, it will not exceed the 132 departures available in the summer of 2024. Qatar Airways’ launch of Toronto service in December 2024 helped, as did that route’s subsequent frequency increase to daily, which takes effect at the end of October 2025. However, some routes have experienced frequency reductions compared to the record offering in 2024. The resulting capacity reduction probably helps loads and yields. Qatar Airways & American’s…

Earlier this week, a teenage stowaway was found on an EL AL flight that was preparing to depart from Israel for the United States of America. Local media reports suggest that the 13-year-old managed to evade Tel Aviv Airport’s infamous security procedures before sneaking onto the flight to New York. Ultimately, the young stowaway was located by members of the flight’s cabin crew before it departed on its long westbound journey, preventing the aircraft from arriving at JFK with one more occupant than planned. Still, the incident highlights the potential vulnerabilities in an airport security system that is known the…

United Airlines has just announced its major international expansion for 2026. The airline has been teasing that we can expect new routes, and the details are now out. United has by far the most interesting route network of any US carrier (United flies to the most destinations and most countries of any US carrier), so I always look forward to seeing what creative new routes the airline comes up with. Admittedly United is fairly limited in terms of its potential growth, given that the airline isn’t taking delivery of many new long haul aircraft. So I’d say these additions are exciting, but perhaps not…
