MILAN — The Norwegian Ministry of Defense has presented a draft proposal for regulations on the possible expansion of military police authority on the remote Norwegian Arctic island of Jan Mayen. The motion, which is open to stakeholder input until next month, would extend the geographical scope of Norway’s existing military police law to include Jan Mayen.According to the Norwegian authorities, the change is necessary due to an uncertain security landscape facing the country, combined with the possibility of a future increase in Norwegian and allied presence in the area. The uninhabited Norwegian volcanic island, located in the Arctic Ocean, is roughly…
Several days ago, I wrote about how Lufthansa had reportedly sold two Boeing 747-8s, and how they could be going to the US Air Force. Well, we’ve now had that detail confirmed, and we also know what purpose the planes will serve. Lufthansa selling two Boeing 747-8s, leaving fleet in early 2026 Lufthansa operates a fleet of 19 Boeing 747-8s. The airline is one of only three operators of the passenger version of the jet (the others are Air China and Korean Air), and as an aviation geek, I’m always delighted that these planes have a long term part in…
On December 15, London Gatwick welcomed the Uzbek carrier Qanot Sharq. It became the second airline to operate between Tashkent and London, joining Uzbekistan Airways. The Uzbek market is growing, including because of inbound tourism. And like Kazakhstan, it uses its great geographic position between east and west. Next year, Centrum Air will begin Tashkent-Manchester flights. In 2026, Gatwick will gain various new and returning operators. They include Air Arabia from Sharjah, Air France from Paris CDG, Condor from Frankfurt, and—by far the most significant—Jet2’s new base with five stationed aircraft. Abra Group, the parent company of Avianca and GOL, is planning to fit 100 of its aircraft, both Airbus and Boeing, with inflight connectivity service provided by Luxembourg-based satellite operator SES. In order to do so, Abra Group and SES will install a new electronically steered array (ESA) antenna on top of the aircraft. This new generation antenna, which protrudes only seven centimeters from the fuselage, provides multi-orbit connectivity, as it is capable of linking to both geostationary (GEO) and low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites to provide reliable broadband connectivity. The system is already operational on 10 of Avianca’s Airbus A320 aircraft, with the remainder of the fleet slated for installation over the coming years. Enrique Villasenor, SES Vice President of Global Airline Partnerships stated that with this system, Abra Group will be able to provide its passengers with “the same fast and dependable internet access passengers enjoy at home no…

If you know a lot about aviation, then you’ll be familiar with the names Pratt & Whitney and Rolls-Royce. These two renowned engine makers are not only among the most popular commercial turbofan makers but also two of the most legendary aircraft engine builders in history. Just four companies in the world produce approximately 99% of the global commercial airliner engine market. Pratt and Whitney typically ranks as the second largest by total production and market share. Rolls-Royce is typically considered to have the smallest unit volume of the four, but outsized revenue as the company targets higher value opportunities.…

After much financial turmoil this year, Spirit Airlines has once again reentered merger discussions with Frontier Airlines. As reported by Reuters, these talks are coming as Spirit recently received an immediate lifeline of $50 million to extend operations, funding that likely prevented the airline from shutting down altogether. Spirit and Frontier first proposed a merger in 2022, but the two parties have yet to reach a firm agreement. The surprising part of these new reports is Frontier’s involvement. Former Frontier CEO Barry Biffle was reportedly cautious about entering a full merger or acquisition agreement with another airline, due to the…
