A little more than 2% of all Boeing 767s built have been built with Rolls-Royce RB211 engines. Most of those were ordered by British Airways, and none appear to be operational today. The tale of the RB211 is a curious one, as the engine proved very unpopular when it was adapted for the Boeing 767. Since then, Rolls-Royce has managed to develop it into one of the world’s most successful widebody engines. One issue that the early RB211 faced was that the GE CF6, the most popular engine for the 767, is such a good and reliable engine. A rival…
Two pilots were killed on the morning of December 28, 2025, after their helicopters collided in midair near Hammonton Municipal Airport in southern New Jersey, authorities confirmed. The accident occurred at approximately 11:25 a.m. local time near a roadway about one mile from the airport. Both helicopters went down in a field, and one of the aircraft caught fire after impact. The pilots were identified as Michael Greenberg, 71, of Sewell, New Jersey, and Kenneth L. Kirsch, 65, of Carneys Point, New Jersey. Greenberg was pronounced dead at the scene. Kirsch was transported to a trauma center, where he later…
You will know by now that Delta Air Lines has confirmed the start date of flights to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The route was announced in October. It’ll be the first time a US carrier has flown there since TWA pulled out in 2001. It’ll be Delta’s second Middle Eastern city, after Tel Aviv. The SkyTeam member’s interest in Saudi Arabia is underpinned by multiple things. They include massive funding from the Saudi Air Connectivity Program, its codeshare agreement with Saudia, and its strategic partnership with the country’s new flagship carrier, Riyadh Air. The war in Ukraine has made one battlefield reality impossible to ignore. Small, inexpensive drones can alter a fight in ways that far exceed their price. They spot targets, adjust fire, strike vehicles, and keep pressure on opposing forces day after day. Just as important, they force an uncomfortable choice. Defenders can try to use expensive interceptors to shoot down cheap, expendable aircraft, or they can absorb damage and accept limits on their own movement and control. This dilemma has pushed militaries toward the next phase of unmanned aviation. The future is not just about more drones, but large numbers of…
The latest schedule update shows that American Airlines has added two more Airbus A321XLR routes. In May, the variant will be deployed from New York JFK to San Francisco. In July, it’ll be used from Boston to Los Angeles. The XLR is increasingly replacing the very high-premium 102-seat A321T (Transcontinental), which is being phased out, as the carrier was not happy with the configuration. American’s first XLR entered commercial service on December 18. It currently has two frames, with many more to be delivered in 2026. All current and future aircraft will have 155 seats: 20 in business (1-1; lie-flat),…
London City Airport (LCY) will introduce a drop-off charge for the first time from January 2026, joining London-Heathrow (LHR), London-Gatwick (LGW), London-Stansted (STN) and Luton Airport (LTN) which already require a payment from drivers. On December 29, 2025, London City Airport said there would be a new $10 (£8) charge for drop-offs lasting up to five minutes from January 6, 2025. Additional minutes will be charged at $1 (£1) each up to a maximum drop-off time of 10 minutes. Disabled people registered as blue badge holders will be exempt from the charge. “This move is part of our commitment to…
The Federal Air Transport Agency (Rosaviatsiya) in Russia has approved a Tu-214 modified with domestic-made systems and components which were designed to replace those sourced through foreign production. On December 27, 2025, United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) confirmed that a domestically produced suite of avionics and components, including advanced safety systems, has received a Certificate of Approval for a Major Change to the Standard Design. News that the modifications comply with Federal Air Transport Agency requirements opens the door for serial production and delivery to Russian airlines. Eight Tupolev Tu-214 planes will be built in 2026, followed by 12 in 2027,…
Some have claimed that the United States Air Force (USAF) uses refurbished commercial aircraft, leading some to imagine a bargain-bin airline hand-me-down with a coat of gray paint added on. The reality, however, is a lot more nuanced. The United States Air Force often flies aircraft that originate from commercial designs, and, in a smaller number of cases, it acquires airframes that previously flew for airlines or other private owners. Refurbished, however, is the wrong word for what actually tends to happen before an aircraft ever actually enters service with the organization. Once a civilian-derived platform has been selected, it…
Hawaiian Airlines resumed its seasonal service to Auckland Airport (AKL) on November 17, 2025, marking the beginning of its 2025-2026 schedule between the New Zealand city and Honolulu. The carrier has served Auckland since March 2013 and recently celebrated its 96th anniversary in November 2025. The airline’s return coincided with a significant cultural moment, as crews from Hawaii’s Polynesian Voyaging Society arrived in Auckland aboard the traditional double-hulled canoes Hōkūleʻa and Hikianalia. Hawaiian Airlines’ Airbus A330 aircraft, also named Hikianalia after the star Spica, touched down as the first of two vessels sharing the name. The following morning, the PVS…
China’s military on Monday dispatched air, navy and missile units to conduct joint live-fire drills around the island of Taiwan, which Beijing called a “stern warning” against separatist and “external interference” forces. Taiwan said it was placing its forces on alert and called the Chinese government “the biggest destroyer of peace.”Taiwan’s aviation authority said more than 100,000 international air travelers would be affected by flight cancellations or diversions. The drills came after Beijing expressed anger at what could be the largest-ever U.S. arms sale to the self-ruled territory and at a statement by Japan’s prime minister, Sanae Takaichi, saying its military…
