I hope everyone is having a nice weekend so far! I’m wrapping up my current trip today (which has been far too long, but also allowed me to spend some time with my dad), so I’ll be publishing my trip report this coming week, and I have a lot of thoughts and experiences to share. On the points & travel front, the biggest story of the week was Spirit’s liquidation, and my thoughts are with Spirit’s employees. I hope that they all find jobs elsewhere ASAP, as the airline had some great people. Other than that, we’ve seen some great…

Despite generally good weather around the country, Delta canceled nearly as many flights today as Spirit did… and Spirit didn’t fly. I don’t know what’s going on, but Delta is unarguably losing its edge when it comes to operational reliability. Delta canceling lots of flights on Friday & Saturday Delta is having some issues with operational reliability at the moment. Yesterday, Friday, May 1, 2026: Delta canceled 157 flights (4% of schedule) and delayed 631 flights (17% of schedule) United canceled 24 flights (0% of schedule) and delayed 815 flights (26% of schedule) American had a great day, and had…

This has to be one of the most unusual airport accidents we’ve seen in a long time. You’d assume this is an AI video, or something, because of how strange it is, but it’s confirmed to be real. We saw Spirit Airlines cease operations early this morning, after losing money for seven years straight, and filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy twice. It goes without saying that Spirit going out of business is a bit of a relief for some of the other airlines in the country that are losing money and struggling, like Frontier and JetBlue. Along those lines, JetBlue is wasting no time adjusting its route network, in order to fill the void left by Spirit, and hopefully improve its own economics. JetBlue’s crew base resizing gives us a sense of its plans JonNYC shares how JetBlue…

As we all know, American has become a distant third among the “big three” US carriers when it comes to both profitability and passenger experience. The issue is that American has essentially squandered the past decade plus trying to become less premium, focusing on a strategy of “the schedule is the product.” Suffice it to say that executives at the airline have realized that this strategy doesn’t work (as have employees, customers, and investors). In recent times, we’ve seen American try to become more premium once again, realizing that’s the only way to compete with Delta and United. Several weeks…

To be clear, that question in the title doesn’t at all reflect my beliefs, but that is a ridiculous explanation that is being thrown around. Here in the United States, we’ve just seen Spirit Airlines cease operations, and of course there’s a political blame game going on. But the simple reality is that Spirit failed to turn a profit for seven years, and lit many billions of dollars on fire. There’s one question that often comes up — why do ultra low cost carriers in the United States struggle so much, while some foreign ultra low cost carriers are extremely…

Spirit Airlines announced on the night of May 1-2, 2026 that it has ceased all operations, with immediate effect. This is one of the largest airline bankruptcies in the United States in years. The last commercial flight operated by the US ultra-low-cost carrier (ULCC) turned out to be NK1833, which departed Detroit (DTW) at 22.31 and landed at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) a few minutes past midnight, all times local.  In the morning of May 2, 2026, and not long after this last flight had landed, Spirit Airlines posted an online notice confirming it is winding down all its operations. …
