Pakistan’s aviation sector is known for being a bit problematic at times, to put it politely. However, this is on a different level… Serene Air suspended due to zero serviceable planes Serene Air is a Pakistani airline that launched in 2017, and it’s privately owned (largely funded by Chinese investors). The airline has a fleet of seven aircraft, including three Airbus A330-200s and four Boeing 737-800s, at least in theory. The airline operates domestic flights, as well as service to China and Saudi Arabia, among other destinations. Unfortunately things aren’t looking so good for Serene Air. The carrier’s air operator…
The number of flights (not seats) between London Heathrow Airport and New York JFK Airport is currently at an all-time high. It is one of the world’s most lucrative routes, and several airlines offer multiple daily flights to cater to the ever-growing demand. Infamously, this includes British Airways, American Airlines, JetBlue, and Delta Air Lines. However, several perhaps unusual players served the market in the past. Of course, there were airlines like Pan American World Airways that flew the route back when they were still alive. Barring those that no longer exist, and looking exclusively at players that flew the…
Earlier this year, I covered how executives at Denver International Airport (DEN) received criticism for spending $165K on a trip to Madrid to attend a conference intended to attract more airlines to the airport, including one executive spending $19K on his business class ticket. As you’d expect, this was quite a scandal, and it just seems like no effort was put into controlling costs. Executives at the airport have faced an ethics investigation over this trip, and the results of that are now in. Ethics board clears airport executives, sort of Denver’s Board of Ethics has cleared Denver International Airport…
Today, the world of commercial aviation is well into the era of twinjet domination, yet a long-serving cadre of quadjets remains in service around the world. The Airbus A340 is one of the last airliners equipped with four engines to still cruise the skies. The reason why it and its brethren like the Boeing 747 and A380 are going out of style is simple economics. So why would airlines choose to continue flying the “gas guzzling” A340? Lufthansa was the launch customer alongside Air France, and it is still the largest operator of the type in the world. The series…
The Boeing 787 Dreamliner represents a significant leap forward in commercial aviation, combining cutting-edge materials, advanced aerodynamics, and innovative propulsion systems to achieve remarkable fuel efficiency and passenger comfort. At the heart of this technological marvel are its two engine options: the Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 and the General Electric GEnx. These two high-bypass turbofan engines are designed specifically for the 787, each offering distinct advantages and considerations for airlines. In our article, we will provide a comprehensive comparison of these engines, examining their design philosophies, performance metrics, and operational impacts to offer a clear understanding of their differences and implications.…
In 2004, the commercial passenger aircraft was revolutionized by the Boeing 777-300ER (extended range) variant of the 777 family. It was first flown commercially by Air France, and at the time, Boeing claimed it was “the most technologically advanced airplane in the industry”, surpassing previous 777-200 and 777-200ER variants, and raising the bar in terms of comfort and range. The 777-300ER featured updated systems, and at the time, it was equipped with the most powerful commercial jet engine available, the General Electric GE90-115B turbofan. Thanks to its long range and excellent fuel efficiency, the 777-300ER became extremely popular for long-haul…
Canadian carrier Porter Airlines has announced three new routes to the United States this winter, including flights to two American Airlines hubs in Miami and Phoenix. This is on top of the airline’s first-ever Caribbean destination from Montreal, with flights to Nassau due to launch next February. Porter recently announced a new codeshare partnership with American Airlines, which will give customers at both airlines greater connectivity between Canada and the US. Although travel between the two nations has been plummeting in recent months, Canada is still the largest source of tourism into the US. Porter Unveils Three New US Routes…
The Boeing 787 has long served as the backbone of Air Canada’s long-haul operations. A next-generation narrowbody equipped with two engines, the Boeing 787, more commonly referred to by industry analysts as the Dreamliner, is capable of operating services to destinations all across the globe from Air Canada’s principal intercontinental gateway hub at Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) and secondary hub at Montreal Trudeau International Airport (YUL). Not only is the aircraft capable of serving these kinds of destinations, but it does so with relatively few seats compared to most longer-range models. The Boeing 777 and the Airbus A350 can…
Secondary Radar/Radar Beacon (ATCRBS) A radar system in which the object to be detected is fitted with cooperative equipment in the form of a radio receiver/transmitter (transponder). Radar pulses transmitted from the searching transmitter/receiver (interrogator) site are received in the cooperative equipment and used to trigger a distinctive transmission from the transponder. This reply transmission, rather than a reflected signal, is then received back at the transmitter/receiver site for processing and display at an air traffic control facility.
