American Airlines Aims To Connect Smaller Cities To The World With 15 New Routes In 2026

While holiday peak travel is in full swing, American Airlines is already looking toward the demand warmer temperatures will bring with new route additions. On Tuesday, the Fort Worth, Texas-based carrier announced 15 new year-round and seasonal routes set to launch this coming Spring and Summer.

With a focus on regional America, the majority of the routes will originate from four of American’s hubs, as it plans to “strengthen domestic connectivity” across its network. However, a pair of new additions will launch from a non-hub East Coast destination where the legacy airline also has a notable presence.

Lincoln Entry Boosts Chicago Network

The hubs involved include Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas/Fort Worth, Miami, and Phoenix. American, which says it serves “more airports in the US than any other airline,” will add to its domestic resume with its entry into Lincoln, Nebraska, as its 240th US destination. Beginning June 4, 2026, daily flights between Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) and Lincoln Airport (LNK) will commence. Roundtrip service from Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) will also begin on the same day.

Both routes are scheduled to operate year-round. The new route from ORD bolsters American’s presence at its hub in the Windy City. The airline, which has been in steep competition with United Airlines, is set to offer over 500 daily departures from the airport next Summer. Two new gates will also complement American’s Chicago operation, following struggling Spirit Airlines’ sale of the gates for a price tag of $30 million.

In addition to LNK, American will also originate service to Tri-Cities, Tennessee, and Erie, Pennsylvania from Chicago. However, these routes are set to commence earlier on May 21. Adding to the new LNK-DFW route, American will introduce service to Roanoke, Virginia, which is also set to begin on June 4. Brian Znotins, the carrier’s Senior Vice President of Network and Schedule Planning, highlighted the “unmatched connectivity” passengers will discover with the new route additions:

“American is proud to offer unmatched connectivity across the United States. Today, we’re furthering our commitment with new routes designed to help customers realize their travel goals in 2026 from important hubs such as Chicago and Phoenix.”

From Charlotte, Miami, Phoenix, & Boston

While the remaining new routes will launch from American’s hubs, Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) is the only non-hub destination set to originate service to two destinations. On June 18, the airline will launch roundtrip flights to Madison, Wisconsin, and Nantucket, Massachusetts. The former will operate year-round, while the latter is scheduled as a seasonal service during the Summer.

Both Charlotte and Miami will each have one new route addition. Beginning May 21, service between Charlotte and Columbia, Missouri, will commence and will be offered on a year-round basis. In March, American will begin Saturday-only flights between Miami and Jackson, Mississippi. The route will operate seasonally until August.

Phoenix will gain six new and one returning route to destinations in Texas, Alaska, Montana, Nebraska, and South Dakota. All are set to begin in early June, with the exception of one, which will commence in late May. Among the routes is service between Phoenix and Lincoln. However, American has not specified a start date for the service.

Connecting Regional Markets With The World

Nearly all of the network additions will be flown by regional aircraft, thanks to American’s partnerships with Republic Airways and SkyWest Airlines, which operate under the American Eagle brand. The airline’s wholly-owned subsidiaries – Envoy Air, Piedmont Airlines, and PSA Airlines – also fly under the regional brand. The only service with a mainline aircraft scheduled is the Summer seasonal service between Phoenix and Anchorage, which is a returning route.

With American’s entry into Lincoln, the airline says residents will have one-stop service to international destinations such as Athens, Cancun, Rome, and Sao Paulo via ORD and DFW. Breeze Airways and United are the only other airlines serving LNK. As American invests in Phoenix with the new routes, travelers will be able to get to national parks, monuments, and more across the Western US and Mexico more easily.
