SAS in dialogue with Boeing and Airbus over widebody order: Bloomberg

SAS Scandinavia Airlines is in talks with Boeing and Airbus over a potential order for widebody jets, with the A350 and 777X both in contention, Bloomberg has reported.

According to a Bloomberg article published on February 4, 2026, the CEO of SAS, Anko van der Werff, has hinted at a large order to meet an increasing demand for long-haul travel.

While not revealing exactly how many widebodies the airline is looking to purchase, van der Werf said it was enough to “make people very interested”.

While SAS’s current fleet consists of only Airbus widebodies, namely the A350-900 and A330-200, van der Werff is said to be considering Boeing 777Xs, 787 Dreamliners, Airbus A330neos or more A350s.

In January 2026, SAS confirmed that it was expanding its intercontinental offering with three new long-haul routes from Copenhagen to Dubai, Phuket, and Krabi during Winter 2026 and 2027.

The carrier also announced that, with the arrival of two new A350s, capacity will increase across key destinations, with 70% more seats to Boston, 20% more to San Francisco, and 10% more to Chicago.

SAS’s most recent substantial order was in July 2025, when the airline declared that it was purchasing up to 55 Embraer E-195 E2 aircraft (45 firm orders and 10 options).

Praising the E2s performance and fuel efficiency, van der Werff said: “Sustainability is totally ingrained in the Scandinavian way of life, it’s not an afterthought. Going for too long with the older generation of aircraft wouldn’t have been an option for us.”

The Embraers will develop the Copenhagen (CPH) hub and grow at Stockholm (ARN) and Oslo (OSL). E2 deliveries to SAS are due to start in late 2027 and be spread over the next four years.

Later this year, Air France-KLM is expected to be given the green light to take a majority stake in SAS, having initiated the process in July 2025. The Air France-KLM Group currently owns 19.9% of the airline.
