Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) announced it had achieved its busiest year on record in 2025, handling just under 70 million passengers. The milestone reflects continued strong travel demand across Asia
The airport handled 69.98 million passenger movements in 2025, marking a 3.4% increase from 2024 and cementing its position as one of the world’s premier aviation hubs.
According to the airport, December 2025 proved to be the peak month, with 6.3 million travelers passing through its terminals. The Saturday before Christmas, December 20, 2025, saw the highest single-day traffic, with more than 223,000 passengers navigating through Changi’s gates.
The record-breaking performance extended beyond passenger traffic. Aircraft movements climbed 2.2% to 374,000 landings and takeoffs, while cargo operations flourished with 2.08 million tonnes of airfreight handled—a 4.5% jump that ranks among the airport’s best cargo performances to date.
China drives regional growth
China emerged as Changi’s powerhouse market, maintaining its position as both the largest and fastest-growing source of traffic. Passenger movements from the mainland surged 12.2% compared to 2024, fueled by new routes and robust travel demand. Vietnam and Japan weren’t far behind, posting impressive gains of 9.8% and 7.0% respectively.
Indonesia, Malaysia, Australia, and India rounded out the top five passenger markets, while short-haul regional routes dominated the busiest flight paths. Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Jakarta, Bali, and Hong Kong saw the heaviest traffic throughout the year.
Aggressive network expansion
In what Changi Airport Group CEO Yam Kum Weng described as a “record year for network growth,” the airport added 13 new city connections—the most in its history. Five of those destinations were in China, including secondary cities like Changchun, Harbin, Lanzhou, Yichang, and Zhangjiajie, reflecting the airport’s strategy to tap into emerging markets beyond major metropolitan areas.
The expansion also brought Singapore’s first-ever direct link to Mongolia through Ulaanbaatar, while Southeast Asian connectivity strengthened with new routes to Labuan Bajo, Padang, and Semarang in Indonesia, plus Nha Trang in Vietnam and Kota Bharu in Malaysia. Vienna became the year’s sole European addition. Two airlines, MIAT Mongolian Airlines and Pelita Air,joined Changi’s roster of carriers.
Cargo operations also saw strategic growth. JD Airlines launched thrice-weekly freighter services from Shenzhen, while Turkish Cargo returned with weekly flights connecting Istanbul, Ho Chi Minh City, and Singapore. FedEx Express added direct services to Anchorage, boosting capacity on the critical Singapore-US trade lane.
Cargo boom driven by tech demand
The cargo sector’s strong performance reflected broader economic trends, particularly surging demand for semiconductors driven by artificial intelligence, electric vehicles, and clean technology. Companies front-loaded shipments in the first three quarters, anticipating year-end demand.
China and the United States led cargo traffic, followed by Australia, Hong Kong, and India. Taiwan rounded out the top three growth markets alongside China and the U.S.
Looking ahead
As of January 2026, roughly 100 airlines operate over 7,300 weekly scheduled flights from Changi, connecting Singapore to more than 170 cities across 50 countries and territories.
“As travel demand in Asia grows, Changi is actively seeking to expand its network in the region, including emerging secondary cities which are witnessing rapid economic and promising tourism developments,” Yam said, adding that the airport will continue investing in innovation to enhance operational efficiency and passenger experience in the year ahead.
