Austrian Airlines bids farewell to first of 17 Embraer E195s in fleet rollover

Austrian Airlines has bid farewell to the first of 17 Embraer E195s as part of its short and medium-haul fleet rollover that will see the carrier shift to only Airbus A320 family jets.

The first Embraer, now registered as I-ENJA, left Vienna International Airport (VIE) on December 12, 2025, and landed at Verona Airport (VRN) to begin operations with Air Dolomiti in Italy.

A total of 13 of 17 Embraer aircraft will join sister airline Air Dolomiti while the other four aircraft will be sold externally, beginning in 2026.

Austrian Airlines said the delivery of the E195 was the “first step” in the process of decommissioning the 17 Embraer aircraft from its fleet.

“We are saying goodbye to the first of 17 Embraer aircraft, which has served us well and provided important services for many years. We are delighted that a large part of the Embraer fleet will now continue to fly with Austrian’s sister company Air Dolomiti,” said Stefan-Kenan Scheib, COO Austrian Airlines.

He added: “I would like to thank everyone in the Austrian team who has made the start of the fleet rollover for Austrian Airlines’ short- and medium-haul fleet so quick, safe, and straightforward.”

The first Embraer E195 flew for Austrian Airlines in January 2016, after joining the fleet to replace the Fokker aircraft.

The now Air Dolomiti operated E195 began scheduled service with Austrian Airlines on April 18, 2016, with a flight from Vienna to Stuttgart, and was the fourth Embraer to be added to the fleet at that time.

Embraer replacements

Instead of the 17 Embraer aircraft, Austrian Airlines will receive six additional brand-new Airbus A320neo aircraft, each with 180 seats.

The first of these six aircraft is expected in summer 2026 and will bring the carrier’s Airbus fleet to 46 aircraft.

Austria Airlines began renewing its long-haul fleet in 2024 with the arrival of the first of two Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners. As things stand, 10 more of these aircraft will be added by the end of 2028.

Austrian Airlines’ fleet of Embraer, Airbus, Boeing 767, Boeing 777, Boeing 787-9 will be narrowed to include only the Airbus A320 family aircraft and the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners.

The Embraer E195 will be phased out by the end of 2028 with the next Embraer expected to depart in February 2026.
