Zaha Hadid Architects wins Vilnius Airport terminal project for 2028 opening

Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA), the studio behind some of the world’s most striking airport terminals, will bring its signature designs to Lithuania’s capital after securing the contract for a new arrivals terminal at Vilnius Airport (VNO).

The 12,500-square-meter terminal, scheduled to open by the end of 2028, will transform the arrival experience for millions of passengers flying into Lithuania. Beyond the typical gates and baggage claim, the space will feature expanded retail and hospitality areas, plus new offices for airport staff.

ZHA secured the project through a competitive public tender run by Lithuanian Airports (LTOU), the state company managing Vilnius, Kaunas International Airport (KUN), and Palanga International Airport (PLQ). It’s a significant win for the London-based studio, which has become synonymous with futuristic airport design following projects in Beijing, Mumbai, and Sydney.

From Baghdad to Vilnius

Founded by the late Dame Zaha Hadid, the Iraqi-British architect who became the first woman to win the prestigious Pritzker Prize, the firm has maintained its reputation for pushing architectural boundaries since her death in 2016.

ZHA-designed airports tend to feel more like art installations than transit hubs, with sweeping curves and dramatic spaces that have redefined what travelers expect from modern terminals.

For Vilnius, this represents a major upgrade to aviation infrastructure in the Baltics. The Lithuanian capital has seen passenger numbers steadily climb as it positions itself as a regional hub, and the new terminal will address growing capacity needs while aiming to create a memorable experience for visitors.

Behind the scenes, London law firm Watson Farley & Williams handled the contractual negotiations between ZHA and Lithuanian Airports. Partner Barry Hembling, who led the legal team, noted that the project “will increase the capacity of Vilnius Airport whilst enhancing the passenger experience when traveling.”
